On the field: Behind a big performance from Satterfield, the Gruver Greyhounds are back in the UIL Class 2A Division II state semifinals for a second year in a row after slipping by Stratford 19-14 in the quarterfinal round last Friday.
Satterfield, who is 36-6 as a three-year starter for the Greyhounds, showed how clutch he could be in the fourth quarter against the Elks. Facing a third and nine at midfield, Satterfield broke loose behind his offensive line for a 25-yard run and a big third down that led to the game-winning score. Satterfield finished the night against Stratford, going 9-of-13 through the air for 169 yards with a pair of touchdown passes, and carried the ball 13 times for 97 yards.
For the season, Satterfield has thrown for 2,510 yards with 36 touchdowns, and rushed for 953 yards with another 22 TDs.
Head coach Kurt Haberthur: “We are playing fast and physical. Everyone knows the gameplan and the scheme, and it’s all clicking. That’s what’s great about having a player like Briggs. He can help implement that gameplan. He is a great leader and he knows the game with a very high IQ. I’ve known Briggs a longtime and we have a tight bond. His leadership is more vocal this year and that has shown in his teammates. I love coaching that guy.”
Satterfield: “It’s fun to be back in the state semifinals. Everyone at the school and the community has rallied around us and it’s always special to be playing December football. I think we have gotten better as the season has gone on and we’re all playing together. For myself, I’m doing a better job of reading defenses and understanding how to follow my blocks better. I’m trying to do a better job of being more vocal when I need to and I just want to lead the right way.”
