Making their first Bowl Game appearance in 14 years, the West Texas A&M Buffaloes made this count and then some.

In a contest that came down to the final seconds, WTAMU was able to end the season on a high-note by getting a dramatic 28-27 win over Arkansas Tech during the 2025 Heritage Bowl at Community National Bank & Trust Stadium in Corsicana.

The Buffs end the season on a four-game win streak, won seven of their last eight, and finished the year at 8-4, the most wins since the 2019 campaign.

“It feels great to end like we did,” WTAMU head coach Josh Lynn said. “We made some coaching changes last offseason that made us better, but we’re not there yet. The goal is to compete in the playoffs. But, we’ll celebrate this Heritage Bowl win and bring the trophy home.”

WTAMU was in control up 28-13 with just under eight minutes to play. The Wonder Boys (7-5), from the Great American Conference, made things interesting scoring on a fourth and goal on a quarterback Carter Hensley eight-yard toss in traffic to Scout Brazeal. Following a two-point conversion, the Buffs lead was cut, 28-21, with 7:29 to play.

Arkansas Tech then made things go from interesting to nerve-wrecking for the WTAMU faithful, taking a final drive inside 15 seconds that led to a Dominic Feliciano two-yard plunge for a score.

That made it 28-27 Buffs with only nine seconds left. The Wonder Boys decided to lineup and go for the two-point conversion and the win, however, Arkansas Tech receiver JD Decausmaker couldn’t bring the pass down in the back of the endzone along with defender Miles Hill being in on the deflection.

“Give Arkansas Tech credit” Lynn said. “They went for that two-point conversion and we made the play. It was almost a great catch and Miles Hill made a huge play ripping that ball out for us,” Lynn said. “What an ending and a play by Miles.”

The WTAMU offense was clicking against the Wonder Boy defense, piling up 537 total yards, with 407 of those coming from a dominant pass attack.

Quarterback RJ Martinez, the Heritage Bowl MVP, led a strong first half. Martinez and company had over 300 yards in the first two quarters, but only led 14-7. In the third quarter, the Buffs found breathing room with a C’ing Blanton on an eight-yard touchdown reception on the opening drive of the third quarter, extending the WTAMU lead 21-7.

The Buffs then took a commanding 28-13 lead before the Arkansas Tech rally on a six-yard keeper from Martinez in the closing minutes of the third. Martinez was on point, totaling 407 yards on 32-of-44 passing with three touchdowns.

Sean “Fats” Johnson, who has come into his own down the second half of the season at receiver, was a massive compliment Saturday. Johnson was a mismatch for the Wonder Boy secondary, catching an eye-opening 16 balls for 180 yards that included a 23-yard touchdown. Johnson’s performance set new records at the Heritage Bowl along with an 83-yard touchdown pass from Martinez to Zach Phipps for the longest TD play.

“RJ has been amazing all year long. He was what we were missing,” Lynn said. “Sean turned it on as the season went on and was probably one of the best players in all of Division II football over the last four games. Sean had every reason to keep his head down early in the year, but he moved positions and stepped up.”

Jayden Hibbler tacked on a steady ground game with 90 yards on 12 carries.

As for the WTAMU defense, freshman linebacker and Idalou graduate, Lucas Jarnigan made 12 solo tackles, with two of those for a loss.
