The University Interscholastic League reported that it is aware of a situation at Amarillo High School regarding an ineligible football player for the Sandies.

The UIL said that it has been in contact with AHS, and the matter is being addressed.

Amarillo ISD released the following statement Thursday.

“We are aware of an Amarillo High football player with an eligibility issue and are working with the UIL to resolve this matter as quickly as possible. We will provide an update when more information becomes available.”

The eligibility of this player can decide the future for the Sandies in the upcoming playoffs. AHS is scheduled to play its final district game at 7 p.m. Friday against Tascoasa at Dick Bivins Stadium.

According to the UIL, several rules can render a football player ineligible, with the most common being the student transferring to a new school for athletic purposes. When a student transfers, they are presumed ineligible for one calendar year unless they can prove the move was not for athletic reasons. Other reasons for ineligibility include not meeting academic requirements, violating the four-year rule, or being ejected from a game, which can result in a suspension for a portion of the next game.

Press Pass Sports will have more on this story as details become available.
