It was a busy night of Week 7 action with district play getting going across the Texas Panhandle and South Plains. Check out some of the results that includes Frenship beating Midland High, Hereford getting by Pampa, West Texas High cruising past Highland Park and New Home dominating Abernathy.
District 2-6A
A strong finish got the Frenship Tigers off to a good district start Friday night.
Frenship trailed midway through the fourth quarter of a shootout at Midland High, but scored two touchdowns in the final 4:17, including the game-clincher on defense to pull out a 42-31 victory.
The Tigers (3-3, 1-0 in district) trailed 31-28 in the fourth quarter but took a 35-31 lead with 4:17 remaining on a 6-yard scoring pass from Quaid Ferris to Chase Campbell. It was the final scoring pass of the night for Ferris, the Bushland transfer who completed 17-of-28 for 233 yards and four touchdowns.
[tds_partial_locker tds_locker_id=”26894″]Campbell caught three of those scores, as he had 11 catches for 147 yards.
Midland (1-5, 0-1) threatened to drive for the winning score and moved into Frenship territory on the ensuing possession. Not only did the Tigers force a fumble, but Rylan Baker returned it 71 yards for a touchdown with 1:23 remaining in the game for the clinching score.
Frenship survived a big game on the ground by Midland’s Jordan McGowan, who ran for 137 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries.
District 2-5A Division I
Lubbock area schools were particularly prolific offensively Friday night, as was evidenced at Lowrey Field in a Lubbock ISD matchup between Lubbock Monterey and Lubbock High.
Monterey took control in the third quarter as Jonah Reed threw six touchdown passes and the Plainsmen cruised the rest of the way to a 56-34 victory.
Reed completed 13-of-17 passes for 224 yards. Three of his touchdowns went to Q Boyd, who had five catches for 112 yards.
Deuce Moore had a huge game running the ball for Monterey (4-3, 2-1), with 222 yards and a touchdown on only 12 carries and he also caught a touchdown pass.
Lubbock’s Zach Reyna threw for 237 yards and four touchdowns. Two of those scores went to Isreal Cervantes, who led the Westerners (1-5, 0-2) with six catches for 110 yards.
Monterey had a balanced attack, running for 322 yards. Lubbock had 391 yards of offense.
The records didn’t lie at Abilene, as Abilene High stayed all alone atop the district by routing Lubbock Coronado 35-6, keeping the Mustangs winless for the season.
Coronado’s only score came in the second quarter on an 18-yard scoring pass from JJ Villalobos to Rebel Beckham in the second quarter to cut it to 7-6. That was as good as it got for the Mustangs (0-7, 0-3), however.
Ethan Joyner led Abilene (5-2, 3-0) by running for 178 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries. Symanni Strahan scored Abilene’s other three touchdowns, running for two and catching one.
Coronado had an especially rough time running the football with negative 18 yards rushing, but the Mustangs lost 49 of those thanks to a blocked punt.
District 2-4A Division I
Hereford got off on the right foot on the road to start district play, as the Whitefaces took control of the game with 21 points in the second quarter and cruised to a 31-14 win at Pampa.
After Pampa took a 7-0 lead on a 36-yard touchdown run by Jarren Hill in the first quarter, it was all Hereford (2-4, 1-0). Kobe Goodloe scored on runs of 1 and 25 yards to give the Herd the lead, and Kalub Ramirez hit Lucas Harmon on a 15-yard scoring pass to make it 21-7 at halftime.
Goodloe ran for 150 yards on 25 carries. Ramirez completed 15-of-19 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns.
Hereford dominated on both sides of the ball, outgaining Pampa (1-5, 0-1) by a 410-131 margin.
District 2-4A Division II
District favorite Lubbock Estacado got all it could handle to open district play on the road, as the Matadors beat Levelland in a penalty-plagued game, 20-13.
Estacado (5-2, 1-0) never trailed as Cedric Ross ran for two touchdowns to give the Matadors a 20-6 lead in the third quarter. Ross finished with 148 yards on 16 carries.
James Bozeman provided a tremendous complement running the ball for the Matadors, as he had 108 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.
It was not a very clean game, as the two teams drew a lot of yellow flags. Estacado and Levelland (4-3, 0-1) had a combined 269 penalty yards, with the Matadors getting flagged 17 times for 156 yards.
District 1-3A Division II
Childress carried the momentum from a big win at Stratford last week into District 1-3A Division II play with a dominating 52-0 shutout at Friona on Friday night.
The Bobcats are now 5-2 on the season and 1-0 overall. The Chieftains fall to 1-6 and 0-1.
Childress won this game in all phases totaling 473 yards of offense to Friona’s 73. The Bobcats running game was the difference with 379 of those total yards coming from the ground attack. Fresh off a huge game at Stratford, junior running back Lucian Davis led the Bobcats once again with 174 yards on 12 carries with two scores. Teammate Corbyn Taylor tacked on 126 yards on 10 carries with a TD.
Dimmitt and Tulia put on quite the offensive show with the Bobcats outlasting the Hornets 70-54 in a wild District 1-3A Division II opener. These two teams combined for 124 points and combined for 1,419 yards of offense.
The Bobcats (5-2, 1-0) put up an incredible 810 yards of offense with 676 of those coming from a devastating ground effort. Quarterback Kaden Carpio had a night he’ll never forget. Carpio was unstoppable running the ball 40 times for an eye-opening 479 yards with seven touchdowns. He also threw for 134 yards. Tulia (2-5, 0-1) quarterback Jacob Trevino also had quite the outing going 33-of-41 for 531 yards with six touchdown tosses.
District 2-3A Division II
Muleshoe snapped a four-game losing skid with a thrilling 55-49 shootout overtime win against Lubbock Roosevelt on Friday. The Mules (3-4, 1-0) posted 506 yards rushing against the Eagles (2-5, 0-1).
Muleshoe’s sensational running back Josue Sigala put the game in his hands running the ball 33 times for 376 yards with six touchdowns including the game-winner in overtime. Teammate Johnny Hernandez added 74 yards rushing with a score.
Slaton knocked Littlefield from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 49-33 win in the district opener. Littlefield is now 6-1 overall and 0-1 in the league. Slaton is also 6-1 while going to 1-0 in District 2-3A Division II.
District 1-2A Division I
There weren’t any surprises to open District 1-2A Division I with the top half of the league all getting lopsided wins on Friday.
Panhandle cruised to a 69-0 shutout of Sanford-Fritch. The Panthers (6-1, 1-0) got a huge outing from running back Lukas Purcell. Purcell toted the rock eight times for 129 yards with three scores. Quarterback Broxton Robinson went 9-of-13 for 245 yards with three touchdowns and ran for 59 yards with two more scores.
West Texas High stayed undefeated on the season handing it to Highland Park 58-6. The Comanches improve to 7-0 overall and 1-0 in district. The Hornets fall to 2-4, 0-1. Quarterback Cayde Winters threw for 121 yards with two scores and rushed for 175 yards with four touchdowns. Teamamate Karson Baurt chipped in with 58 yards on the ground with a TD.
District 2-2A Division I
It was a big night of openers in District 2-2A Division I. New Home won its fifth straight game by blasting Abernathy 39-0. The Leopards move to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in district. The Antelopes slip to 3-2 on the year and 0-1. Quarterback Brayson Beck was 8-of-15 for 166 yards passing with a pair of touchdowns. Beck also ran for 66 yards with another score. Parker Liles was his go-to target snagging four catches for 94 yards with two TDs.
New Deal made some big noise knocking off defending district champion Post 34-21 on Friday night. Lions quarterback Dallas Sumner did it all in the win against the Bold Gold. Through the air, Sumner was 13-of-23 for 182 yards with a pair of touchdowns. He also tacked on 118 yards rushing on 16 carries. Teammate Jonas Rodriguez led New Deal in rushing with 141 yards with a touchdown. The Lions are now 3-2 on the season and 1-0 in district. Post drops to 4-2, 0-1.
District 1-2A Division II
Farwell continued to stay hot opening district play by doubling up rival Bovina 28-14. The Steers push their record to 5-1 on the season and 1-0 while Bovina is 2-4, 0-1. Bo Reed led Farwell with 92 yards rushing and a touchdown.
District 2-2A Division II
It was another quick night of work for Hale Center with the Owls blasting Ralls 52-0. Hale Center stays hot to open the season at 5-1 and 1-0 in district play. Hale Center totaled 479 yards of offense while holding the Jackrabbits to 89 yards. Quarterback Carlos Gonzalez was on fire going 18-of-21 for 319 yards with three touchdown tosses. Ryan Mesquite caught eight of those passes for 103 yards with two TDs. Jeremiah Guerrero rushed for 61 yards with four touchdowns.
District 5-2A Division II
Wellington and Wheeler had no issues in its respective district openers Friday. Wellington took down Clarendon 48-6 and Wheeler blanked Quanah 49-0.
The Skyrockets (5-1, 1-0) were led by Callen Kane’s 322 yards on 16-of-22 passing with six touchdowns. Kamron Brooks caught three of those passes for 133 yards with two scores.
Wheeler (5-1, 1-0) saw Chris Gallardo run the rock 15 times for 183 yards with two TDs. Israel Andrade had two 50-yard touchdown runs for 100 yards on the night and two scores.
In one other district game, Shamrock earned its first win of the season outlasting Memphis 46-33. The Irish (1-5, 1-0) piled up the yards starting with quarterback Jace Moon who threw for 489 yards with six touchdowns. Cross Stambaugh caught 11 passes for an eye-popping 263 yards and two scores, as Josh Whittington had seven snags for 157 yards and three TDs.
Non-district
Bushland closed out the non-district schedule winning its second straight game by going to Andrews and leaving with a 34-12 victory. The Falcons enter a bye week before opening District 1-3A Division I play at 3-4. Quarterback Kannon Aven had his second straight solid start lighting up the Mustangs defense going 18-of-25 for 197 yards and two touchdowns. Colton Foote ran for 76 yards with a score.
Dalhart ended non-district play getting a fifth straight win after blowing out Denver City 54-22. The Golden Wolves enter a bye week at 6-1 on the year before heading into the district schedule. Hunter Trusler did his job with 248 yards passing and three touchdowns. Trusler added two more TDs on the ground with 86 yards rushing.
River Road put up 400 yards of offense but had trouble stopping Lamesa falling 63-33 on Friday. The Wildcats fall to 1-5. The Tornadoes had 500 yards of offense led by quarterback Daniel Ramos who threw for 238 yards with six touchdowns. Lamesa running back Dee V Lugo piled up 240 yards with three scores. The loss spoiled an incredible outing by River Road running back Brodrick McGowan who chewed up Lamesa for 317 yards rushing on 36 carries with five touchdowns.
In one of other non-district game, Shallowater defeated Pecos 59-7.
