The opening week of Texas High School football is in the books. Take a look at the recaps from Class 3A-2A across the Texas Panhandle and the South Plains including Canadian’s win over Elk City, Okla., Muleshoe’s big victory against Brownfield, Gruver’s win against rival Spearman and Panhandle’s blanking of Clarendon.
CLASS 3A
Canadian cruises by Elk City
The Canadian Wildcats shook off a slow start to cruise by Elk City., in the season opener 33-6 on Friday night at Wildcat Stadium.
The Elks (1-0) actually took the lead scoring on the opening drive marching down the field getting a Rhaziah Reese 20-yard touchdown run. However, from that point forward, Canadian settled in and took complete control of the game scoring 21 unanswered to go up 21-6 by the break and running away for the victory.
On the offensive side of the ball, running back Slayden Dickinson picked up where he left off last year. Dickinson, the Press Pass Sports Newcomer of the Year in 2024, carried the ball 18 times for an eye-popping 212 yards with touchdown scampers of 31 and eight yards. Quarterback Weston Mitchell was solid taking over as the sophomore was 11-of-15 for 118 yards and rushed for two scores.
On the defensive side, Canadian held Elk City to 239 yards of offense. Junior Cervantes was in on 12 tackles. Teammate Isaac Saenz had 13 tackles, three of those for a loss.
Canadian will host Bushland (1-0) on Friday.

Mother nature tried to play a role in this game, but the Dalhart Golden Wolves were able to get a win in the books knocking off Levelland 55-15 at home.
The Golden Wolves (1-0) opened up the game with a 7-0 lead after one but exploded for a 28-point second quarter to go up 35-7 at the break and cruise the rest of the way.
Dalhart’s offense put up 384 yards of offense with great balance rushing for 197 yards and throwing for 187. The Golden Wolves defense did their part holding Levelland to 199 total yards.
Quarterback Hunter Trusler was very efficient going 11-of-18 for 178 yards passing with a touchdown toss. Talon Garcia was a go-to target snagging three catches for 78 yards with a score. Brett Alvar punched in two scores to go with 40 yards rushing.
Wellington blasts Alpine, head coach Greg Proffitt gets 100th carer victory
It was a very special night for head coach Greg Proffitt and the Wellington Skyrockets during 57-13 thumping of Alpine at Tigers Stadium in Snyder on Friday.
Proffitt picked up his 65th win at Wellington in seven seasons but way more importantly, Proffitt won the 100th game of his career that also included a stop at his alma mater of Goldthwaite.
The Skyrockets earned this milestone with balance. Wellington tallied 379 total yards with 210 of those coming through the air. Quarterback Callan Kane couldn’t miss the entire night going 16-of-18 for 203 yards with five touchdown passes. Kamron Brooks caught two of those TDs, totaling four catches on the night for 45 yards.
Carson Kane added two snags for 57 yards with a score of his own. On the ground, Noah Cantu tacked on 76 yards off of 10 carries with two touchdowns.
Muleshoe hammers Brownfield
It was the perfect start to open the head coach Bo Dickinson era at Muleshoe, as the Mules blasted Brownfield by a 42-12 count Friday night on David Wood Field at Benny Douglass Stadium in Muleshoe.
Dickinson and fans were thrilled to see dynamic running back Josue Sigala back on the field after suffering a season-ending leg injury midway through last season. Sigala didn’t disappoint showing that speed that makes him so good. Sigala was able to slice and dice through the Cub defense toting the rock 13 times for 134 yards with four touchdowns. Quarterback Brayden Butler had a solid debut going 6-of-8 for 38 yards with a score.
CLASS 2A
Gruver doubles up Spearman in Hansford County showdown
The Gruver Greyhounds are on a mission and that showed Friday night as they pulled away from the Spearman Lynx for a dominating 42-21 win against their Hansford County rivals at Lynx Stadium.
A veteran Greyhounds team got off to a very fast start going up 21-0 in the first half. Spearman didn’t back down chipping away by slowing the game down while cutting the deficit 21-12, however, the Greyhounds speed was simply too much, and Gruver was able to pull away down the stretch for the lopsided victory.
Senior leader and quarterback Briggs Satterfield was stellar for the Greyhounds going 18-of-22 for 250 yards passing with four touchdowns and ran for another. Sophomore standout receiver Mason Lankford snagged five catches for 99 yards with a score, Nick Shepard tallied five catches for 44 yards with a TD and Brock Butler had five catches for 75 yards with a touchdown.
The Greyhound run game was strong with Emmanuel Valverde rushing for 76 yards on 11 carries. Dax Conyers chipped in 46 yards on eight carries with a score. On the defensive side, Butler had nine tackles with an interception and two forced fumbles. Valverde had 11 tackles and Lankford added four tackles with a pick.
Jailen Vasquez led Spearman at quarterback with 25 carries for 136 yards and two touchdowns. Hudson Swan had four carries for 21 yards and linebacker Landon Sonnenberg racked up 11 tackles and caused an interception.
Sanford-Fritch stuns River Road
Sanford-Fritch not only honored two former great head coaches in Rick Ware and Houston Moos with a special field naming ceremony before the game, but the Eagle football team gave those two men a bigger honor by handling River Road with a surprising 34-14 victory in one of the more stunning games of Week 1.
This Eagles I1-0) win was never in doubt under new head coach Brandon Bennett. Fritch jumped out to a 21-0 lead and never trailed throughout. Rocky Ferguson had 14 carries to lead the Eagles with 57 yards with a score. Quarterback Ethan Beltran added 39 yards rushing on 15 carries with a touchdown and threw for another score. Draydon Renville added a 75-yard kickoff return.
Ferguson added six tackles with a sack on the defensive side.
West Texas High thumps Lockney
The West Texas High offense put on quite the show in a 53-19 lopsided home win over Lockney to open the 2025 season on Friday night.
The Comanches offense couldn’t be stop piling up 560 total yards with 474 of those coming on the ground. WT High’s offense was absolutely clicking totaling 28 first downs on the night and were 3-of-4 on fourth down chances.
Quarterback Cayde Winters is in midseason form with Lockney having zero answer for the senior standout. Winters torched the Longhorns on the ground carrying the ball 15 times for 235 yards with three touchdowns. He also threw for 86 yards with another two scores. Teammate Kelby Sherwood was no slouch himself rushing for 181 yards on 26 carries with a pair of TDs.
Wheeler shuts out Highland Park
The Wheeler Mustangs were able to pull away from a gutsy Highland Park team to gain a hard fought 27-0 shutout on Friday night at Nicholson Field in Wheeler.
The Mustangs defense was the story with defensive end Jackson Graves leading the effort. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound edge rusher made life miserable for the Hornets getting four sacks on the night to go with 13 tackles. Diego Soto added to the solid defensive play with 11 tackles, four of those for a loss. The Mustangs offense was able to pick up the slack. Quarterback Creed Newkirk rushed the ball 10 times for 120 yards with a pair of touchdowns. He was also 4-of-8 for 63 yards with another score.
Week 1 quick hits
Panhandle absolutely crushed Clarendon 71-0 in the season opener at Broncos Stadium. In a quick night of work, Army commit Broxton Robinson went 7-of-13 passing for 174 yards with six touchdown passes and ran for another TD. Caden Armes had three touchdown receptions and 47 total yards. Robinson added nine tackles at linebacker.
Vega started the season off going on the road and getting a 28-6 victory at Crosbyton. Omar Segovia had a tremendous night rushing for 230 yards on 18 carries with three touchdowns. He also had five tackles. Teammate Kase Vogler added 73 yards rushing and was 6-of-12 through the air with a TD.
Shallowater opened the 2025 campaign getting a big 28-6 road win at Monahans on Friday. Quarterback Cooper Martin did it all rushing for 123 yards on 11 carries with two scores. He was also 8-of-17 passing for 143 yards with another score.
Dimmitt chewed up 249 yards on the ground on the way to a 41-0 shutout over Memphis on Friday night. Kaden Carpio led the ground attack with 81 yards on only four carries with a pair of scores. Isaia Sifuentez had 14 carries for 64 yards with a TD.
It was a big night for Tulia as the Hornets went on the road and took down Floydada 48-14. Wide receiver Logan Beccera snagged five catches for 116 yards with a touchdown. Quarterback Jacob Trevino was 14-of-24 for 264 yards and threw for four scores.
Ropes was dominant in its season opener getting a 33-0 shutout against Hale Center at home Friday night. Ryland Keith scored three touchdowns for the Eagles and ran for 159 yards on 26 totes. Kade Franklin threw for 69 yards and ran for 32 yards.
Jim Ned pulled away from Lubbock Estacado for a 42-21 victory at home on Friday. Despite the loss, Cedric Ross broke loose for a 98-yard touchdown run and finished the game for 130 yards to lead the Matadors. The Indians got a great performance from Aidan Ellis who scampered for 113 yards with a score.
Slaton ran away from Friona for a 50-22 win. The Tigers piled up 529 yards of offense led by quarterback Jacob Lopez. Lopez was 9-of-13 passing for 168 yards with a touchdown and carried the ball 12 times for 168 yards with two more TDs.
Sunray played well but was unable to hang on to a 42-26 second half lead falling to Hooker, Okla., in overtime 50-42. Despite the loss, quarterback Zeke threw for 262 yards and rushed for three scores. Isaac Mendoza added 96 yards rushing on 16 carries.
Midland Greenwood was too much for Childress in the season opener as the Rangers won 42-7.
Sweetwater handled Idalou to open the up the year 44-22.
Shamrock hung around for a while before Sundown pulled away for a 52-6 win.
Though they were called due to rainy weather in the second quarter, Stratford was leading Abernathy 14-0 nearing halftime. Before the game was called, quarterback Chase Lantelme was already 5-of-8 for 176 yards with a pair of touchdown tosses.
Farwell and New Deal’s game was called at halftime due to inclement weather conditions. The game was cancelled tied, 7-7.
Bovina and Texico, N.M., was cancelled and never got underway due to inclement weather conditions.
