28 Years of Coaching and Counting
Kurt Haberthur, affectionately known as “Coach Hab” by his players, has dedicated nearly three decades to coaching football and track. With previous stops at Perryton, Amarillo High, Sunray, Randall, and Pampa, Coach Hab brings a wealth of experience to Gruver.
One of his proudest moments came in 2024 when his team won a thrilling quarterfinal game. Facing tough opponents like Stratford and Muenster has only strengthened his resolve to lead his team to success.
Black Markers and Chris Stapleton
Coach Hab has a few quirks that make him stand out. On game days, he always carries a black Expo marker in his pocket—a simple superstition that keeps him grounded.

If he weren’t coaching, you’d likely find him as a game warden or fishing guide, embracing his love for the outdoors. With Chris Stapleton playing in his office, Coach Hab stays relaxed yet focused, ready to tackle every challenge.
Work Hard, Rest Hard
Coach Hab’s coaching philosophy is straightforward and effective.
“Work hard, rest hard.”
For him, the biggest lesson sports have taught is to “stay the course,” a mantra that emphasizes perseverance and dedication.
His favorite drill, Goal Line O&D, reflects his love for the high-stakes moments of the game. Whether on offense or defense, Coach Hab believes in giving equal attention to both sides of the ball.
This season, his goal is simple but powerful: to be better than they were last year.
A Community That Rallies Together
For Coach Hab, the best part of coaching in Gruver is the unwavering support from the community. High expectations drive the team to excel, and the community is always there to provide whatever the program needs.
Gruver’s state send-offs are legendary, showcasing the pride and unity of the town.
Coach Hab also loves the Texas Panhandle sports scene for its small-town rivalries and the way communities come together in times of need.
