AUSTIN – Silverton’s Maddie Francis wasn’t the only Texas Panhandle athlete coming home with gold during the UIL Class 1A state track and field meet Saturday in front of an energetic crowd at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
[tds_partial_locker tds_locker_id=”26894″]Booker’s Julian Barton ended his stellar high school career leaving with more hardware to add to the trophy case.
Barton came out blazing in the 400-meter dash taking the lead on the curve to pull away for a time of 49.01 to win the gold medal. Barton wasn’t done. Less than an hour later, Barton again showed his speed getting another impressive time of 22.21 for a bronze medal.
“It was awesome to get a gold and end up with two medals,” said Barton, who was competing for the third time at the state track meet. “I felt really good out there and being a senior, I wanted to go out doing the best I could. Getting an individual gold is something I have also been working toward.”
Barton ended his high school career as a four-time medalist between Follett and Booker.
After winning all three sprint events at the Region I-1A meet, Valley’s Trinity Schlueter was able to leave Mike A. Myers with one more medal to add to her collection. Schlueter, a multi-sport standout that will play her college basketball at Colorado Mesa, won the silver medal in the 400-meter race with a 1:00.34. Schlueter just missed out on the medal stand getting fourth in the 200-meter race (26.30) and was fifth in the 100-meter dash (12.69).
McLean’s Hailo Moon and Happy’s Hayes Bressler were two other Amarillo-athletes to medal Saturday. Moon placed second in the shot-put event tossing a 38-10 for a silver medal. Bressler was able to clear 14-9 for a bronze medal in the pole vault.
