Ascension Academy boys win TAPPS District 1-2 track and field title

The Ascension Academy track and field teams were the showcase at the TAPPS District 1-2A track and field meet in Lubbock on Friday.

The Ascension boys won the team championship with 107 edging Lubbock Southcrest which finished with 103 points. The Ascension girls team came in second by one point of a team championship. The Lady Cardinals had 115 points to come in runner-up to Lubbock Kingdom Prep with 116.

School records were broken for Ascension Academy on the boys side. Roman Martinez was a star for Ascension being a part of two new records and winning three gold medals. Martinez won the 800-meter relay with a 2:05.14 for a new school mark. He then won the 1600-meter race pacing the field with a 4:50.68.

Teammate Michael Hall helped getting Ascension a team championship as well clearing 11-feet to win the pole vault.

Martinez was then part of a mile relay team with Zachary Parker, BJ Britton and Owen Chow to set another school record running a gold medal time of 3:35.08. Chow and Britton to a great afternoon winning gold in the 400-meter race sprinting to a 51.82. Britton took silver in the high jump clearing 5-8 and teammate Wyatt Cox earned a bronze medal in the shot put with a new school-record throw of 40-3 1/2.

The Ascension Lady Cardinals were highlighted by Kathleen Bartley that won the pole event getting on the gold medal stand with an 8-6. The Ascension mile relay team of Hattie Vise, Ashli Bellew, Mackenzie Morris and Berlyn Gabriel ran to a silver medal (5:14.78).

San Jacinto Christian Academy saw a handful of performers advance to regionals. Marshall Mincher qualified in three events. Mincher won three silvers in the long jump (20-0 3/4), the 110-meter hurdles (17.54) and the 200-meter race (24.16). Teammate Benton Myers won gold in the shot put with a toss of 42-3 and Zaily Alexander of Holy Cross Catholic Academy won the discus event with a launch of 91-1.

The top four individuals qualify for the TAPPS North Regional track and field meet on April 25 on the campus of UT-Arlington.
