Lance Dykhouse, Amarillo High Swimming, Sr.
In the pool: Dykhouse was one of the keys to the Amarillo High boys rolling to the team points title last week at the District 3-5A swim meet at the Amarillo Town Club.
He won two individual events, starting with the 100-yard freestyle, which he won in 51.39 seconds, almost 4 ½ seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Later, Dykhouse got a break in the 100 backstroke when teammate and top seed Alec Purdy was disqualified for a false start. Dykhouse, the only serious threat to Purdy, swam a 57.18, winning by over eight seconds.
He was actually the first Amarillo High boys swimmer in the water, as he began the day swimming the leadoff leg of the 200 medley relay, which won in a time of 1:46.40.
Coach Ron Lee: “I think his expectations are still coming. The conversations that we’ve been having is don’t look at yourself as a has-been swimmer, look at it as still developing your potential up to the very end. He’s going to be swimming faster at regionals. That’s what I’m trying to get Lance to see is his quality as a swimmer in his own stance and he’s doing a good job. I’d like to see him at regional finals go 48 in the 100 free and 52 or 53 in the 100 back.”
Dykhouse: “I think it went pretty well, especially considering I’ve been battling torn cartilage in my knee. I was pretty pleased with my times. The 100 free is kind of a second event to me, especially since Alec got disqualified in the 100 back it was up to me to lead the team to victory. I was disappointed because that was my motivation to go faster. I wanted to take it nice and clean so I wouldn’t get disqualified. In the 100 free I’d like to go 48 or below and in the 100 back I’d like to go 52.”
