Ca’Nia Mitchell, Amarillo High basketball, Sr.

On the court: Not many players are playing as well or consistent as Mitchell is at the moment. The senior guard has come into her own and that showed in a pair of District 2-5A wins over Plainview and Caprock last week.

Against the Lady Bulldogs, Mitchell was stellar posting 27 points with 11 rebounds for a double-double with four steals. In the Caprock victory, Mitchell equaled that effort scoring 25 points to go with 14 rebounds for a second straight double-double while adding nine assists.

On the season, the senior guard is putting up 12.5 points a game on top of 6.4 rebounds a night and shooting over 40 percent from beyond the arc.

Coach Jeff Williams: “Ca’Nia started on a JV team as a freshman that went 37-0. We could see how good she was going to be then. She helped us out a lot as a sophomore and has been a starter the past two years. She is one of those that plays a lot of roles for us. She is a true leader, and her confidence has come a long way. She believes in herself and doesn’t let the little things affect her like the past years. She has a driven mindset and is playing a high level of basketball.”

Mitchell: “I can’t say enough about how much I love this team. We are executing on offense and playing great defense. I’ve improved with my confidence more than anything. From how I shoot the ball, or when to take a shot. I’ve learned to let things go and not let things bother me like they used to. My role is now a captain on this team, and I take that seriously.”
