Amarillo High opens 3-5A beating Plainview
Following behind girls action, District 3-5A got started on the boys side to open the December calendar Tuesday night.
After a run to the UIL Class 5A state semifinals a year ago, the Amarillo High Sandies are off to another strong start to the year and kept that momentum rolling by beating Plainview 58-30 at the Bulldogs Gym.
The Sandies shook off a slow start taking control of the game in the second quarter outscoring the Bulldogs 22-5 to go up 30-10 by halftime. AHS cruised from that point forward maintaining a double-digit advantage throughout the second half.
Brodie Von Netzer led a strong back court performance with a team-high 13 points followed by teammate Creed Barnes with 12. Teammate Joaquin Ortega chipped in 10 points scoring seven of those points in the first half.
AHS (12-3 overall) is off to a 1-0 start in District 3-5A. Plainview falls to 4-3 overall and 0-1.
Tascosa rolls past Lubbock High
Coming off a strong performance during the Yellow City Classic, Tascosa went on the road and kept up the hot play by downing Lubbock High in convincing fashion 72-41 on Tuesday night.
The Rebels are off on the right foot to the district season moving to 1-0 and 8-2 overall. LHS drops to 4-3 overall and 0-1.
Tascosa placed three players in double figures led by Ben Kenney’s 16 points. Koko Omer poured in 14 with Cam Goodman posting 11.
In a couple of other District 3-5A openers, Lubbock-Cooper made the trip across town to knock off Lubbock Coronado to earn a 52-44 victory and Lubbock Monterey fended off Caprock 64-54 at the Caprock Activity Center.
Despite the defeat, Caprock’s Braiden Johnson scored a team-best 18 points. The Longhorns (4-6) are 0-1 to start league play while Monterey improves to 2-8 overall and 1-0 in district.
District 3-5A Girls
Amarillo High beats Plainview on the road
Through the first three weeks of district play, Amarillo High looks to be a team playing at a high level.
The Lady Sandies made sure to sustain that intensity going on the road to defeat Plainview on Tuesday getting a 62-38 win at the Bulldogs Gym.
AHS didn’t hesitate getting off to a fast start opening the first quarter with a 21-9 advantage. The Lady Sandies pushed that lead to 38-20 by halftime and were in total control by the end of the third leading 52-24.
Ca’Nia Mitchell put together an impressive outing pouring in a game-high 22 points to lead the Lady Sandies to the win. Bella Edwards and Kam Soukup each had nine points.
AHS is now 10-2 overall and 3-0 in District 3-5A. Plainview (6-5) is still searching for its first league win falling to 0-3.
Tascosa tames Lubbock High
Like their arch-rival Amarillo High, the Tascosa Lady Rebels have looked superb to open the year as well as district action.
Tascosa had no problems going on the road to dismantle Lubbock High on Tuesday by a final score of 75-38.
Balanced scoring paced the Lady Rebels with four players finishing in double figures. Tryssa Dowd put up a game-high 20 points followed by Devaeh Johnson with 18. Teammate Emily Sims tallied 15 and Nic’Kiyah Fisher added 10.
Tascosa is now 11-1 overall and keeps pace with Amarillo High and Lubbock Monterey at 3-0 in District 3-5A. LHS (5-10) falls to 1-2.
Speaking of Lubbock Monterey, the Lady Plainsman highlighted by the No. 1 Division I prospect in the country in Aaliyah Chavez came to Amarillo on Tuesday night.
In front of a big crown on hand to see the five-star Chavez, Monterey coasted to an 82-14 victory.
Chavez scored 26 points against the Lady Longhorns with 17 of those coming in the first half.
Monterey (16-2) remains unbeaten at 3-0 in District 3-5A. Caprock falls to 2-8 overall and 0-3 in the league.
In one other district matchup Tuesday, Lubbock-Cooper knocked off Lubbock Coronado 51-46.
