WOODROW – Sunray kept up its impressive season by handling Hawley in a game that wasn’t near as close as the 49-40 final score showed in the Class 2A Division I area round Friday night at Patriots Stadium at Lubbock-Cooper Liberty High School.
Sunray was never in trouble taking a commanding 49-16 lead before Hawley chipped away in the final minutes making the score closer than it actually was.
The Bobcats remain perfect on the year at an impressive 12-0 and will now take on another unbeaten in Post (12-0) in the regional semifinals back at 7 p.m. Friday back at Lubbock-Cooper Liberty.
Quarterback Armando Lujan and the offense took the opening drive and shoved it down the Bearcats throat that resulted in a Lujan one-yard keeper putting Sunray up 7-0 at the 8:44 mark of the opening stanza.
Hawley did take a brief lead in the second quarter when quarterback Keagan Ables found Tate Scott on a quick slant on a fourth and three that put Hawley on top 8-7 after a two-point conversion.
From that point forward, it was all Sunray. The Bobcats offense went to work. Lujan hit a slip screen to Kagan Davis who did the rest of the work sprinting 40-yards and the Bobcats were back up 13-8.
On the next drive, Lujan found Connor Petereit over the middle for a four-yard pitch and catch as the Bobcats took a 21-8 advantage into the break.
Lujan is closing in on the all-time UIL passing record. The sensational senior finished the game going 16-of-24 for 265 yards with four passing TDs. He also had two more rushing scores on 30 yards on the ground. Lujan is currently sitting at 14,291 career yards and needs just 117 to break Hunter Lile of Booker’s UIL record of 14,408.
Davis caught five passes for 86 yards with a score and Petereit finished with 70 yards on five receptions with two TDs.
The Sunray defense totaled an impressive 10 sacks on the night. Erick Calsadillas had a game-high four, Julio Vallado picked up three sacks and Arnold Mendoza added two.
CLASS 2A DIVISION II
Gruver beats down Iraan
The Gruver Greyhounds remain undefeated after beating up Iraan 49-19 during a Class 2A Division II area round game on Friday night in Levelland.
The Greyhounds are a perfect 12-0 and will now get Tahoka (10-2) at 7 p.m. Friday at Happy State Bank Stadium in Canyon.
Greyhound quarterback Briggs Satterfield was 12-of-16 for 190 yards passing with two touchdowns and ran for 102 yards on 11 carries with three more scores.
Walker Maupin decimated the Braves with 173 yards rushing on 24 carries with a touchdown and freshman Mason Lankford caught three balls for 64 yards with a TD.
Defensively, Victor Flores had nine tackles with a stack and Stephen Cowan finished with 11 tackles.
Turnovers doom Stratford in loss to Wink

In Friday night’s Class 2A Division II area round playoff game against Wink at Lowrey Field, Stratford didn’t have much of a margin for error, and didn’t stay within it. The Elks simply gave up the ball too often, leading to too many Wink points and a 42-20 defeat
While the final margin is an indication that the Elks (7-4) were outplayed, they weren’t completely outclassed. They stayed with Wink (11-1) statistically and even outgained the Wildcats by over 100 yards, although a lot of that came in the fourth quarter when the game was out of reach.
The Elks maybe didn’t beat themselves, but they didn’t help themselves as much as they could.
Stratford did more to hurt itself offensively than Wink’s defense in the first half. The Elks committed five turnovers, most notably losing three fumbles which the Wildcats turned into touchdowns to take a 21-0 halftime lead.
On the first possession after the opening kickoff, Stratford moved the ball near midfield, but Julio Valdez lost a fumble and Wink recovered at the Stratford 47-yard line. The Wildcats faced a fourth-and-six and went for it, and it paid off as Layne Lusby hit Timothy Montoya for a 40-yard gain down to the Stratford 3.
The Wildcats then took advantage of a short field later in the first quarter when they tripped up Stratford’s Bryce Braden, who fumbled, and Kasen Wilson returned it to the Stratford 17. That set up a 2-yard scoring run by Hudson Morgan only 37 seconds into the second quarter to give Wink a 14-0 lead.
Wink cashed in another Stratford fumble when Kemyd Faciane scored on a 12-yard run to make it 21-0 midway through the second quarter. It was the first of three 12-yard scoring runs for Faciane, who had a game-high 164 yards on 32 carries.
Those mistakes were magnified by the fact that Wink turned all of them into touchdowns.
Stratford’s patented running game struggled to get going in the whole night, as the Elks had only 86 total yards on the ground and two rushing first downs.
Wink got the second half kickoff and put the game out of reach when Faciane scored on his second 12-yard run of the night to make it 28-0.
The Elks answered on their next possession when Braden concluded the drive by scoring from a yard out to cut it to 28-7. They seemed to get some life from that offensively.
In the fourth quarter, Lantelme hit Jones for a 6-yard score and Julio Valdez from 35 yards on a fourth downplay to cut it to 35-20. However, that was as good as it got for the Elks.
