Randall knocks off Canyon in 4-4A showdown
The Randall Lady Raiders avenged a sweep from Canyon in the first meeting of district play, to rally back and ground the Lady Eagles in a hard fought four-set win (25-22, 25-17, 16-25, 28-26), Saturday at the Leslie Broadhurst Gymnasium.
Randall cruised in the first two sets only to see Canyon take the momentum in a very sound third set. In the fourth, these two teams showed what the rivalry was made playing point for point.
The fourth set was tied 19-19 before the Lady Eagles were set to force a fifth set up 24-22. However, Randall took back control scoring six of the next eight points to get the huge victory and earn a season split.
“I think we showed a lot of grit and backbone,” Randall head coach Karli Morrison said. “We played really good on defense and kept the ball in play. We’ve been working on pressure situations in practice and making every point matter. That paid off in that fourth set.”
With the win, the Lady Raiders (25-12) are now 10-1 and in a first-place tie of District 4-4A with West Plains (25-11, 10-1 in district). Randall travels to rival West Plains with first place on the line Tuesday night.
“I love that destiny is in our control,” Morrison said. “We’re not done yet and there is a lot of volleyball left. We have to stay focused and get ready for a great practice Monday before the next game Tuesday.”
Brooke Henderson played a great game for Randall finishing with 17 digs and 13 kills for a double-double. The senior also served up three aces. Teammate Sidney Soria captained the team on the floor with 36 assists and Kambree paced the back row with 20 digs.
Canyon’s Alainna Bellino and London Gibson combined for 26 assists. Landri Jay hit the floor for 19 digs and Brooklyn Kinsey tallied a team-best seven kills.
West Plains rolls by Perryton
West Plains kept pace with the Randall Lady Raiders before the two meet up for first place Tuesday night.
The Lady Wolves eased past Perryton on Saturday thanks to a 25-18, 25-13, 25-18 win.
West Plains (25-11) is tied with Randall (25-12) at 10-1 atop the District 4-4A standings. The Lady Wolves host Randall for outright first place of the league Tuesday night.
In Saturday’s win over Perryton, Aaniyah Kitchen had a team-high 13 kills. Piper Patterson posted 10 digs and five aces and Cecilia Murillo went for 21 assists.
Dumas, Hereford get victories
Dumas stays all alone for the fourth and final playoff spot with a sweep of Borger, 25-16, 25-18, 25-21.
With three games remaining, Dumas (21-19) remain a game ahead of Hereford for the final playoff spot at 6-5 in district play.
Per usual, Rylee Schacher put together a double-double effort for the Demonettes with 10 kills and 10 digs. Sophia Clements paced the offense with 31 assists and Kennedy Clements chipped in nine kills with four aces.
Hereford stayed right behind Dumas by sweeping Pampa, 25-20, 25-17, 25-21, on Saturday.
The Lady Whitefaces (22-18 overall) are one game behind Dumas currently sitting in fifth place in the league at 5-6.
London Baker dished out 17 assists with 13 kills for a double-double to lead the Lady Whitefaces. Karizma Trevino totaled 15 digs.
District 3-5A
Amarillo High clinches share of 3-5A title
The second meeting of crosstown rivals Amarillo High and Tascosa wasn’t quite as exciting as the first one.
The Lady Sandies took control early and never relinquished that momentum running away with a sweep of the Lady Rebels, 25-21, 25-19, 25-16.
AHS (33-6 overall) clinches a share of the District 3-5A championship improving to 14-0. The Lady Sandies can claim their fifth straight overall title with a win over Lubbock Monterey at home Tuesday. Tascosa (29-9) is now 11-2 in district.
Ellen Head was strong on the back row with 11 digs and served up three aces. Sienna Cavalier went for 12 kills and Payton Cash handed out 16 assists, made eight digs and had three aces.
The Lady Rebels had Bennet Berryman pace the team with 16 dig and Libby Miller register 16 assists.
In other district matches, Caprock swept Palo Duro 25-9, 27-25, 25-15.
The Lady Longhorns saw Kendall Wilson power down 13 kills with six blocks.
Lubbock-Cooper swept breezed past Lubbock High, 25-6, 25-9, 25-20 and Lubbock Coronado handled Plainview, 25-21, 25-23, 21-25, 25-18.
District 1-3A
River Road rolls Friona
For the first time in over three years, the River Road Lady Cats were able beat Friona and did it in four-sets Saturday, 25-21, 12-25, 25-16, 25-16.
With the win, the Lady Wildcats push their overall record to 21-12 and 2-3 in District 1-3A. The Squaws (25-10) fall to 2-4 in league play.
Senior leader Reese DeHart was clutch for River Road posting a double-double with 23 assists while diving for 11 digs. Teammate Harlea Adams had 10 digs and was amazing at the service line with eight aces. Hailey Mayes also stepped up with 16 digs on the back row.
In the other district matchup Saturday, Dalhart downed Dimmitt, 25-10, 25-9, 25-8. The Lady Wolves (24-7-1) stay in second place behind Bushland at 5-1.
District 2-3A
Childress edges Idalou in five sets
For the second time this district season, the Childress Lady Bobcats were taken to five sets with rival Idalou but were able to come away with a thrilling win.
On Saturday at Idalou, Childress was able to get a big victory in a back-and-forth contest holding off the Lady Wildcats, 25-13, 23-25, 25-20, 19-25, 15-12.
The win puts the Lady Bobcats (23-13) clinches a Class 3A playoff spot and keeps Childress in second place behind Shallowater in District 2-3A at 4-1 in the league. Idalou (22-15) falls to 3-3.
Journey Prince was key at the net with 10 blocks and eight assists with teammate Faith Foster chipping in three blocks and three scoring tips.
In another district clash Saturday, Shallowater cruised by Littlefield 25-9, 25-17, 25-8.
District 1-1A
In a game with playoff implications, the Shamrock Lady Irish held off a late surge from Miami to get a very intense five-set win, 16-25, 29-27, 25-22, 18-25, 15-12, on Saturday afternoon at home.
Shamrock (15-11) moves into third place in District 1-1A at 4-3. Miami (11-16) takes a big hit with the loss falling to 2-6 in district.
Jasmine Cota, Taylor Cook and Addi Jernigan played a key role in the win for the Lady Irish. Cota was strong on the back row with 24 digs, Cook put together a double-double with 17 kills and 12 digs, as did Jernigan with 19 assists and 15 digs.
In two other district games, Wildorado swept Darrouzett, 25-3, 25-5, 25-7, and Fort Elliott swept Kelton, 25-20, 25-21, 25-19.
