Canyon Lady Eagles edge Randall in highly anticipated race 

In what was looked at more of a regional or state preview given the high profile of the teams competing, Canyon was able to hold off arch-rival Randall to win the District 4-4A cross country crown in a race that delivered on Friday morning at Canyon High School.

Canyon, Randall, and Dumas are all ranked in the top five of Class 4A and all will march on to the Region I-4A meet which is set for Monday, Oct. 21, at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.

Canyon scored 30 points to edge Randall’s 37 points with Dumas coming in third at 58 points.

The Lady Eagles were able to place five runners in the top 10 highlighted by the sensational Addyson Bristow. The defending UIL Class 4A state champion pulled away from the field pacing a winning district time of 10:32.30. That was 30 seconds better than second place finisher Emily Gross of Dumas, who clocked an 11:02.25.

Bristow’s teammate Michaela Sharber placed fifth with a time of 11:19.80 followed by Avery Brown in sixth (11:26.48) and Reese Wilson rounded out the top 10 for Canyon placing 10th with a 11:58.79.

Nayomi Granados led the Lady Raiders with a bronze medal performance of 11:11.94. Teammate Brooke French earned fourth clocking a 11:16.71 and Rebel Rea was seventh (11:30.81).

On top of Gross’ second place finish for Dumas, Berkley Funderburg took ninth (11:51.25).

Canyon Eagles dominate to claim district championship 

The Canyon boys cross country team completely dominated the field during the District 4-4A cross country meet on Friday morning at Canyon High School.

The Eagles didn’t leave a doubt on who the best team was scoring 15 points which was 27 points better than second place Dumas’ 42.

Lathan Lewter and Ryan Fernandez finished first and second place with both running beside each other as a team than any kind of individual. Lewter clocked a 15.43.52 followed right by Fernandez’s 15.43.81. Teammate Domenic San Miguel earned third place with a 16:12.41, Noah Cooper was fourth (16:12.60) and Dayson Smith rounded out the top five pacing a 16:25.29.

Dumas had a strong outing placing the sixth through nine spots. Ivan Guitierrez led the Demons thanks to a time of 16:27.61. He was followed by Nefi Moreno in seventh with a 16:27.85, then Riley Roman in eighth (16:30.66) and Adrian Solis with a ninth-place finish (16:34.93).

Rounding out the top 10 was Noah Holland of West Plains (16:37.05).

The Region I-4A boys cross country meet is set for Monday, Oct. 21, at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.

District 3-5A

Palo Duro’s Saidgurhan wins 3-5A individual title 

Palo Duro’s Abdirisak Saidgurhan had an outstanding showing that resulted in a District 3-5A individual championship for the Dons on Thursday at Rick Klein Park.

Saidgurhan clocked a winning time of 15:18.54 which was a near 30 seconds better of Lubbock High’s Arturo Rodriguez (15:42.81) in second place. Behind Saidgurhan’s performance, Palo Duro led all Amarillo ISD schools finishing fourth as a team with 124 points.

Lubbock Monterey was the district champion (71 points). Amarillo High placed fifth (125 points) and Tascosa was seventh (145 points).

Palo Duro teammate Abdihafit Mohamed was also strong getting fourth individually with a time of 15:59.15. Caprock did come in ninth as a team, but Ayden Vasquez found his way in the top 10 individually for the Longhorns placing ninth (16:20.27). Amarillo High’s Jackson Newman was 10th (16:23.35).

The Region I-5A cross country meet is set for Tuesday, Oct. 22, at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.

 Amarillo High Lady Sandies claim 3-5A championship 

In a battle of arch-rivals, Amarillo High held off Tascosa to win the District 3-5A title on Thursday at Rick Klein Park.

Amarillo High registered 67 points to Tascosa’s 79 for the win. Palo Duro was eighth with 222 points and Caprock came in ninth (250 points).

Kinley Davis did her job for the Lady Sandies placing fifth individually. Davis ran a time of 19:44.59 to make that happen. Right on Davis’ heels was teammate Kylee Costley, who took sixth overall with a time of 19:53.79.

Palo Duro’s Sabrina Carbajal was seventh individually (19:56.09) and Tascosa’s Ivana Ibarra placed 10th (20:14.90).

Lubbock High’s Reese Pena was the individual meet champion pacing the field with a time of 18:09.77.

The Region I-5A girls cross country meet is set for Tuesday, Oct. 22, at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.

Dalhart Lady Wolves edge Canadian for district title 

The Dalhart Lady Wolves were able to hold off the Canadian Lady Cats in a very strong race between two talented regional contenders for the District 1-3A cross country championship on Friday morning at Canyon High School.

Dalhart tallied a total of 23 points to knock off Canadian, which scored 36. Bushland was third at 91 points.

Dalhart had five runners make the top 10 led by Circe Johnson. Johnson placed second overall thanks to a time of 12:06.52. Johnson’s teammate Lylianah Flores came in third for a bronze medal with a 12:11.32, then Danna Arriaga in fourth (12:31.12) and Quiroz Evelyn in fifth at 12:45.89.

Canadian’s highly decorated standout Konnar McClendon won the District 1-3A individual title pacing the field with an impressive 11:11.51 beating Johnson by a near full minute.

Arionna Black helped the Lady Cats with a sixth-place finish clocking a 12:48.68) and Elizabeth Guerrero came in eighth (13:01.27).

Tulia’s Diana Briones rounded out the top 10 with a time of 13:30.82.

The Region I-3A girls cross country meet is set for Tuesday, Oct. 22, at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.

Canadian boys win 1-3A championship 

Opposite of the girls meet, the Canadian boys cross country team was able to get by Dalhart to win the District 1-3A championship on Friday at Canyon High School.

The Wildcats posted 26 points to Dalhart’s 34. Childress was third with 92.

Canadian’s Joseph Dominguez was the individual champion running a 17:27.71. Teammate C.J. Jiminez followed in second thanks to a 17:48.83. Taylor Urschel came in sixth (18:36.24), Daniel Urschel was ninth (19:13.61) and Luis Valles rounded out the top 10 in 10th (19:32.79) for the Wildcats.

Dalhart’s Israel Vasquez took third place pacing an 18:17.38. Anthony Rodriguez followed his Dalhart teammate in fourth (18:26.37) and Jarob Scriber took fifth (18:31.97).
