Big second half propels Sunray past Canadian in small school showdown
Sunray completed a strong non-district schedule with an unblemished record beating arguably the best team on it thanks to a strong second half getting a 30-20 victory against Class 3A Canadian at a packed Bobcats Stadium on Friday night.
The Bobcats complete their non-district schedule a perfect 5-0 with wins over Hooker, Okla., Abernathy, Stratford, Childress and Canadian. The Wildcats fall to 3-2 on the year.
Canadian jumped out quick going up 13-0 on a Slayden Dickinson 71-yard touchdown run on the opening play of the game and then another Dickinson six-yard TD scamper on the following drive putting the Wildcats up 13-0.
The Bobcats settled in scoring 17 unanswered points highlighted by a 12-yard pitch and catch from Armando Lujan to Dawson Bennett that gave Sunray a 14-13 advantage in the second quarter.
Canadian was able to retake the lead right before half, but from that point forward into the second half it was all Sunray.
The Sunray defense, which allowed 185 rushing yards to Canadian in the first half, stifled the Wildcat run game to five yards on the ground in the second half and less than 100 yards in the final two frames.
The Bobcat secondary also became ballhawks picking off Canadian quarterbacks Weston Mitchell and Clay Kendall six times. Lujan, who is better known for his offense, had three of those picks while Bennett made two interceptions.
Offensively, Lujan was 17-of-31 for 160 yards with a pair of TDs. Mendoza rushed it 16 times for 101 yards. Canadian’s Dickinson did finish the game with 177 yards rushing on 21 carries with two scores.
Muleshoe piles on the points in win over Clyde
For a second consecutive outing, the Muleshoe offense was unstoppable, the only difference this week is the Mules were able to come away with a victory outlasting Clyde on Homecoming 63-48 on David Wood Field at Benny Douglas Stadium in Muleshoe on Friday night.
Over the last two games against Canadian and now Clyde, the Muleshoe (4-1 overall) offense has produced a total of 130 points on top of 1,211 total yards of offense.
Leading that explosive attack is quarterback Nathan Martens. Muleshoe’s senior signal caller had his second straight impressive outing by lighting up the Bulldog secondary going 25-of-33 for 425 yards with seven touchdowns. That gives Martens 881 passing yards over the past two games with 11 touchdowns.
Mauricio Herrera had another monster outing on the outside snagging nine catches for 179 yards with three scores. Yahir Quezada also torched the Clyde (2-3) secondary with 11 catches for 148 yards with a pair of TDs. On the ground, Josue Sigala tallied 108 yards on 12 carries with a touchdown.
West Texas High runs away from River Road
The West Texas High Comanches looked good stepping up in classification with a convincing 40-7 win at River Road on Frida night.
The Comanches continue to impress at the halfway point of the season at 4-1 overall while the Wildcat drop their second straight game falling to 2-2.
After a slow start that saw WT High lead 8-7 midway through the second quarter, the Comanches turned the momentum when quarterback Cayde Winters faked a jet sweep and hit a streaking TJ Riggs for a 34-yard touchdown touchdown putting WT up 14-7.
On River Road’s ensuing drive, quarterback Alex Warren was picked off by Karson Baurt at midfield.
That allowed Winters to go back to work leading a 50-yard drive that resulted in a Winters 25-yard keeper of a run-pass option, as the junior dual-threat QB broke to the outside to find paydirt. That gave the Comanches a commanding 22-7 halftime advantage they’d never relinquish.
Winters finished the game with 112 yards passing and three touchdowns and ran for 88 yards with two more scores. Kelby Sherwood led the ground attack for WT High chewing up 165 yards on 24 carries with a score and Jasper Rippetoe had two TD snags on 50 yards receiving.
The Comanche defense did their job holding the Wildcats under 200 yards of offense and only 80 yards rushing.
Tulia out guns Lamesa
Tulia got off to a fast start and were able to hold off a late rally for a huge 42-35 road win at Lamesa on Friday night.
The Hornets (2-3) had the offense clicking in the first half going up 28-14 at the half. After the Tors tied it, 28-28, in the third quarter, Tulia pulled away in the fourth quarter outscoring Lamesa 14-7 in the final frame for the win.
Quarterback David Molina had his best showing of the season going 21-of-33 for 334 yards with three touchdowns. Molina also added 82 yards rushing on 15 carries with two more TDs.
Teammate Logan Beccera was the go-to target for Molina snagging six catches for 146 yards with a pair of scores.
Week 5 non-district quick hits
- Dimmitt jumped out to a big lead and were able to hold off a late rally to beat Highland Park 29-21 at home on Friday. Bobcat quarterback Jack Lunsford totaled 283 yards of offense with a touchdown. Dimmitt is 2-3 overall while the Hornets fall to 3-2.
- Childress dropped its second straight game falling to Wichita Falls City View 41-25 on the road. Kade Jenkins had 15 tackles with four of those solo for Childress (2-3).
- Abernathy was too much for Friona during a 34-14 home victory on Friday. The Antelopes (3-2) were led by Rolando Martinez’s 204 yards rushing and four scores. Receiver Darion Duvall made seven catches for 156 yards with a TD. Friona is still seeking its first win falling to 0-5.
