Panhandle pummels Clarendon 

Panhandle wasted no time catching fans attention with a fast and furious first half that resulted in a one-sided thumping of Clarendon 64-0 shutout at Panthers Stadium on Friday night.

Panhandle (1-0) scored on every possession of the first half posting a 51-0 advantage by halftime.

Junior quarterback Broxton Robinson looked in midseason form entering his second year as the Panhandle starter. Robinson couldn’t miss through the air going a perfect 10-of-10 for 249 yards with three touchdown passes. On the ground, Robinson exploded past the Broncos (0-1) defense for 106 yards on only eight carries with another score.

Robinson wasn’t the only player impressing. The offensive and defensive line both did their job as did Rush Walterscheid. The versatile back had six carries for 62 yards rushing with three runs to paydirt while catching a 93-yard touchdown pass from Robinson.

Gavin Brookshire led the offensive line grading out at 96 percent with two knockdowns.

Sunray rallies past Hooker 

Sunray had to empty the tank but was able to overcome a 14-point deficit to a very good Hooker, Okla., team to come away with a hard fought 30-28 home victory against the Bulldogs on a beautiful Friday night.

The Bulldogs, one of the top Class 2A teams out of Oklahoma, jumped on the Bobcats with 14-0 advantage at the 11:18 mark of the second half.

The Bobcats (1-0) never flinched reeling off 14 unanswered points to tie the game.

The comeback started on a four-yard scamper by quarterback Armando Lujan, Sunray then tied the game at 14 on a Lujan two-yard toss to Dawson Bennett with 45 second left to halftime.

Hooker (0-1) had a 22-14 lead heading into the third quarter until Sunray took over for good. Lujan hit Connor Petereit on a nine-yard pitch and catch that cut the lead 22-20. The Bobcats then took the lead for the first time and for good on another Lujan to Petereit connection from eight yards out with 10:53 left in the fourth. After a two-point conversion, Sunray had the momentum up 30-22.

Hooker had one final chance with a late TD but the two-point conversion came up short.

Sunray’s prolific passer Lujan had a strong outing going 31-of-43 for 373 yards with three touchdowns. Bennett was his main target snagging nine catches for 137 yards with a score. Petereit had eight catches for 52 yards with two TDs.

Defensively, Arnold Mendoza had seven tackles for the Bobcats with a late game sack to help preserve the win. Ty McDowell made 12 tackles with of those solo.

Shamrock stuns Sundown

Shamrock is definitely the talk around the Texas Panhandle after Week 1 following a very impressive showing during a 38-34 stunning win over Sundown to kick off the season at Happy State Bank Stadium on Thursday night.

The Roughnecks (0-1) got things started on the right foot marching right down the field for a 6-0 lead on the opening drive. Shamrock answered quickly scoring on its opening drive on the way to 26 unanswered points to take a commanding 26-6 lead into halftime.

The Irish (1-0) Built the lead to 38-20 before the Roughnecks tried to make a late charge before falling short 38-34.

Shamrock quarterback Philip Cook was sensational with his arm and his feet. Cook totaled 389 yards of offense on his own going 9-of-18 for 158 yards passing with a pair of touchdowns, then torched Sundown with his legs chewing up 231 yards rushing on 13 carries with three more TDs.

The big play came to Josh Whittington on a 90-yard-deep ball down the sideline for a Shamrock touchdown. Jeremiah Luna added in on the stats with 12 carries for Shamrock finishing with 65 yards with a TD.

Stratford rolls over Abernathy 

In a meeting of two strong programs from across West Texas, it was the Stratford Elks showing what the hype is all about during a 46-20 dominating win at Abernathy on Friday night.

With the win over the Antelopes (0-1), the Elks (1-0) run their regular season win streak to 28 straight dating back to 2021.

Stratford was busy offensively making the most of 57 snaps racking up 510 yards of total offense.

Stratford sensation Bryce Braden dominated at linebacker eating up the Antelopes with 18 tackles to go with four sacks. Offensively in a limited role, Braden ran for 80 yards with a pair of touchdowns.

Picking up the slack on the offensive side was Julio Valdez. The versatile athlete made a move to running back getting 15 carries for 120 yards with two scores. He also caught five passes for 76 yards with another touchdown.

Chase Lantelme had a big evening on both sides of the ball for Stratford. Playing quarterback, Lantelme threw for 179 yards with a touchdown and on defense made 10 tackles with two interceptions.

West Texas High gets past Lockney 

Finally healthy, West Texas High quarterback Cayde Winters showed fans how special he can be helping lift the Comanches to a 30-25 victory at Lockney in the season opener on Friday night.

Winters, who missed all of last year with a leg injury, went off and the Longhorns defense didn’t have an answer. Winters didn’t go to the passing game much, but made up with that with his elusive speed rushing it 27 times for 282 yards with three touchdowns.

Teammate Kelby Sherwood complimented Winters with 51 yards rushing and a score.

West Texas High moves to 1-0 on the year while Lockney falls to 0-1.

Gruver handles Spearman in Hansford County rivalry 

The Gruver Greyhounds made it clear on who the best team in Hansford County is with a 49-15 thumping of rival Spearman at Greyhounds Stadium on Friday night.

Gruver out matched the Lynx with the play up front and the explosiveness of second year starting quarterback Briggs Satterfield. Satterfield knifed through Spearman for 382 total yards combining for five touchdowns. The junior was 11-of-14 passing for 220 yards with a pair of touchdown tosses. He then used his speed to go for 162 yards on only five totes with three more scores.

Walker Maupin also did damage for the Greyhounds rushing for 61 yards and found the endzone on a kickoff return. Stephen Cowan made three catches for 97 yards with a TD.

Defensively, Gruver’s Victor Flores had 13 tackles one for a loss and kicker Emmanuel Valverde was a perfect 7-for-7 on extra-points.

The Greyhounds improve to 1-0. Spearman drops to 0-1.

Week 1 quick hits

• Wheeler was able to put away Highland Park 27-7 thanks to a strong second half. The Mustangs (1-0) wore down the Hornets behind running back Julius Atherton’s 128 yards rushing on 28 carries. Atherton also caught a 20-yard TD.
• Wellington made a long road trip well worth it beating Alpine 38-12 in Abilene on Friday night. The Skyrockets (1-0) rushed for 292 yards as a team behind Noah Cantu and Travon Lewis. Lewis led Wellington with 147 yards on 13 carries with a touchdown while Cantu punched it in three times for TDs with 108 yards on nine carries.
• Vega opened the season holding off Crosbyton at home 14-7 on Friday night. Omar Segovia led the Longhorns with 177 yards on 26 totes with two scores. Gatlin Green made 19 tackles.
• New Deal was too much for Farwell in a competitive season opener beating the Steers 34-20. Farwell quarterback Jonathan Armstrong totaled 305 yards of offense with two touchdowns.
• Texico, N.M. was able to pull away from Bovina for a 50-12 victory as the Wolverines improve to 2-0 on the season.
