On Saturday, Dumas hosted the only state qualifying 7-on-7 tournament in the Texas Panhandle with seven teams vying for one spot to College Station at the end of the month.
With the Demons already punching a ticket to the Division II state tournament, that left the door open for an Amarillo-area school to qualify and Hereford took full advantage.
The Whitefaces picked pool play wins over Randall 38-18 then Lamesa 42-0 to play Lubbock Christian High School in the championship.
In the championship game featuring two of the top quarterbacks across the Texas Panhandle and South Plains in Hereford’s Kalub Ramirez and LCHS standout Welker Horn, it was Ramirez and the Whitefaces outgunning the Eagles for a 34-27 to advance to the state tournament.
Hereford will make its second appearance in the past three years in College Station.
Dumas was the only team that went unbeaten during Saturday’s tournament beating Hereford 27-21, downing Randall 29-21 and thumping Lamesa 32-14.
With the Demons already qualifying for state in May, Dumas did not participate in the title game. Dumas is becoming a staple at state making their fifth appearance overall.
Childress is headed back to state
The Childress Bobcats had a tremendous Saturday morning going a perfect 3-0 at the Texoma 7-on-7 state qualifying tournament.
The Bobcats earned victories against Holliday 35-27, followed by a win over Archer City 20-7 and then capped the day off with a win over Wichita Falls City View 20-14 in overtime.
Childress, which will compete in Division III bracket, makes its eye-opening sixth straight trip to the 7-on-7 state tournament.
The Bobcats join Dumas, Hereford, Muleshoe and Sunray as all Texas Panhandle teams that will compete at Veterans Park in College Station on June 27-28.
