District 4-4A
The chase for first place stays wild
Starting the second half of District 4-4A play there are plenty of teams at the top all looking to claim the outright championship with seven games to go entering Thursday and Friday.
Dumas and West Plains took a major step forward toward that claim with both getting clutch victories over the past two days.
West Plains avenged a loss to Pampa in the district opener a few weeks ago, as it took extra-innings, but the Lady Wolves were able to get past the Lady Harvesters with a thrilling 3-2 victory in nine innings on Thursday.
Pampa took an early 2-0 lead only to see West Plains chip away scoring one in the fourth and the tying run in the sixth to force free softball. After a scoreless seventh and eighth innings, Kaydence Singletary of West Plains stole home and stole the game from Pampa as the Lady Wolves came away with the exciting win.
Starting pitcher Jaylen Kaps continued her stellar season. Kaps worked all nine innings, scattering four hits allowing only one earned run with a walk and racked up an eye-popping 20 strikeouts.
Pampa’s Cambree Dyer did homer despite the loss. West Plains (11-14-2) is now in a first-place tie with Dumas (20-6) at 6-2 for the league lead. Pampa (10-9) drops a game back at 5-3.
The Demonettes and Lady Eagles combined for 19 runs, 22 hits and 10 extra-base hits in this slugfest.
In the early stages of this game, it was all Canyon going up 6-3 after a four-run bottom of the third highlighted by a Maddie Hight three-run home run.
The Demonettes never went away and took control with a huge six-run top of the sixth. Madi Zubia had a clutch two-run double that put Dumas up 8-6, then Aaliyah Garcia delivered a two-run single to give the Demonettes much needed insurance.
Dumas slugger Katie Contreras feasted on Canyon pitching going 2-for-4 with a double and a two-run homer finishing with three RBIs. Zubia was 2-for-4 with three RBIs of her own.
Depsite the loss, Cayon’s Hight was 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs, and Bayleigh Burks delivered two homers with a total of three RBIs.
Canyon (13-12) drops to 4-4 in district.
In the other district games, Randall (15-13, 5-3 in district) stays a game back in the district race downing Borger 17-1, and Hereford snaps a four-game losing streak beating Perryton 10-4.
District 3-5A
Amarillo High, Caprock both cruise
Nobody looks to be getting in the way of the Amarillo High Lady Sandies as they garnered another lopsided win by blanking Plainview 13-0 on Thursday.
The Lady Sandies stay in total command of District 3-5A with a 4-0 mark and improve to 21-6 overall. Plainview is now 6-18 overall and 2-2 in the league.
AHS slugger Danae Lopez tallied a 3-for-4 day at the dish with a double and two RBIs. Teammate Brylee Baker went 1-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.
Caprock eased past Palo Duro 27-0 on Thursday. Grace Morales and Kai Camacho combined for 10 RBIs in the win. Morales was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate including a homer and a triple to total five RBIs. Camacho was 3-for-5 with a double and five RBIs.
The Lady Longhorns are now 9-8 overall and 3-1 in district. Palo Duro (3-10) falls to 0-4 in district.
District 1-3A
Bushland, Tulia, River Road garner wins
Bushland notched another district win by handling Canadian at home 13-1 on Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Falcons are soaring at 4-0 in 1-3A and 18-4-1 overall. The Lady Wildcats fall to 1-3 in the league and 6-7.
Slugger Abby Howell bombed a homer and tripled to tally a pair of RBIs. Teammate Kylee Jordan had three RBIs with a homer and double of her own.
Tulia stayed in second place thanks to a shutout of Dalhart on Thursday. The Lady Hornets (14-9-2) are a game behind Bushland at 3-1 in the league race. Dalhart drops to 9-8-1 overall and 2-2.
Tulia pitcher Kyla Rodriguez handcuffed Dalhart hitters limiting the Lady Wolves to one hit over seven shutout innings with nine strikeouts.
In the other district game, River Road knocked off Dimmitt 8-3.
District 1-2A
Gruver beats Booker in wild one
Gruver continues to show major improvement under head coach Trent Lankford, who many know as the highly respected Lady Hounds basketball coach.
Lankford’s team showed some grit on Friday rallying back to beat Booker 14-13.
The Lady Kiowas led 11-5 heading into the bottom of the fifth before the Lady Hounds exploded for a seven-run bottom of the fifth to go up 12-11.
The big inning for Gruver was highlighted by two inside-the-park home runs by Brooklyn Vasquez and Jacque Munoz.
Munoz went 3-for-5 in the win with two homers on the day and three RBIs. Vasquez was 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
In the other two district games, Sanford-Fritch handled West Texas High 12-2, and Sunray beat Claude 13-3.
