The Lady Sandies stacked up an eye-popping 156 points to crush second place Panhandle which had a strong showing with 80 points. Tascosa and Lubbock-Cooper tied for third with 72 points.
Sierra Cornell and Keely Harper were the catalyst for the Lady Sandies monstrous afternoon. Cornell took home a pair of gold medals as well as a silver.
Cornell held off Randall’s Brooke French by a second with a time of 2:22.42 to get gold in the 800-meter run. She was earned a silver in the 400-meter run with a 59.42 and was a part of the Lady Sandies 400-meter relay gold medal team that clocked a 4:05.09.
Teammate and senior Keely Harper also had an impressive outing. Harper dashed to a time of 15.19 for a gold in the 100-meter hurdles and was also a part of the Lady Sandies mile relay team that won gold. Harper also nabbed a silver medal in the 300-meter hurdles (45.89).
The 14-year-old freshman ran with purpose leaving Dick Bivins Stadium with two golds and a silver. Land caught major attention during the 300-meter hurdle race when she won a star-studded field that included Amarillo High’s Keely Harper, as well as Canyon’s Brooklyn Kinsey and Sydnee Winfrey. Land didn’t show any nerves on the big stage dominating the field with a time of 44.10.
The Tascosa Lady Rebels tallied 119 points to win the JV division and the West Plains junior high won the eighth-grade division with 136.33 points.
Saturday’s champions
Here’s a look at the rest of Saturday’s gold medal winners.
Tascosa’s Saphina Stanley was arguably the MVP of the Amarillo Relays Meet of Champions. After getting her first gold on Friday by winning the long jump, Stanley opened Saturday getting her second gold medal of the meet by popping off a jump of 36-8 to win the triple jump. The senior then ran a great 400-race into the wind to win her third gold with a time of 59.12.
Canyon senior and University of Missouri signee Hannah Stuart went double gold for a second year in a row. After repeating as champion in the 3200-meter run on Friday, Stuart easily claimed her second gold of the weekend in the 1600-meter race with a 5:06.92.
Randall’s Tahlie Brandt set a new Amarillo Relays Meet of Champions record in the wheelchair shot put event with a toss of 15-6.
The Panhandle 400-meter relay team of Nelly Thiessen, Carly Land, Makennah Austin and Leah Land were very impressive to open Saturday’s finals clocking a time of 49.04 to win the gold medal. The Ettes were also silver medalist in the 800 and 1600-meter relays.
Bushland’s Leah Ruthardt showed her speed by winning the 100-meter dash with a gold medal time of 12.19. Ruthardt also took home a silver in the 200-meter race with a 25.29.
Lubbock-Cooper’s Niomi Wines won the 200-meter race sprinting to a time of 25.10.
