District 3-5A

Amarillo High got off to the start they expected to open District 3-5A as the talented Lady Sandies made quick work of Caprock with an 11-0 shutout at home on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Sandies never put this contest in doubt posting seven runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 7-0 lead and never looked back.

Tessia Guzman handcuffed Caprock in the circle working all five innings of the run-rule game, scattering two hits without giving up a run and racking up four strikeouts.

Taylyn Shuffield provided the pop at the plate going 2-for-3 with a two-run double, Mykaela Samuels had a team-high three RBIs and slugger Danae Lopez went 2-for-2 with an RBI of her own.

Amarillo High (18-5) is 1-0 in 3-5A while Caprock (6-8) drops to 0-1.

In the other district contest, Tascosa fell to Plainview 17-3 on Friday. The Lady Rebels are now 7-15 overall and 0-1 in the league. The Lady Bulldogs (5-16) are 1-0.

District 4-4A

If the first two weeks has shown us anything, it’s shown that anyone can beat anyone, and this is going to be a race to the end through the entire district season.

Through four games, not one of the eight teams in District 4-4A has a perfect record under their belts.

A showdown happened Thursday in Canyon, with the Lady Eagles taking on former Canyon coach Nicole Coffee and her West Plains Lady Wolves.

Coffee left Canyon in 2021 and led the Lady Eagles to the 2017 UIL state tournament, which to this day is the only Texas Panhandle team to ever grace Austin and the state tourney.

This was a very competitive battle. With the game tied, 4-4, in the top of the sixth the Lady Wolves were able to break the contest open with a four-run inning highlighted by a two-run bomb from Emaree Chavez that lifted West Plains to a major victory.

The next day however, West Plains wasn’t able to hold on to that momentum as suddenly hot Randall was able to take down the Lady Wolves 4-2 capping off a huge week.

Randall had started 0-2 in 4-4A, but the Lady Raiders have gotten themselves right back in the race with a dominating 13-2 run-rule win over Dumas on Thursday, followed by the victory over West Plains on Friday.

During the Dumas game, Landri Holcomb was on fire going 5-for-5 with three doubles finishing with five RBIs.

The Demonettes didn’t flinch and were able to rally back on Saturday by blasting Hereford, 14-0. The Lady Whitefaces had been unbeaten in district coming into that contest after beating Pampa 7-2.

Dumas’ bats were unreal against Hereford as the Demonettes piled up eight home runs from Aaliyah Chairez (2), Madi Zubia (2), Katie Contreras, Lisbeth Quiroz, Vida Fierro and Yaritza Vargas.

As it stands through the first four games, Pampa (8-7) and Hereford (11-10) lead the district with 3-1 marks. Then it’s a log jam in the middle with West Plains (7-14-2), Dumas (16-6), and Randall (12-12) all 2-2. Borger (10-12) is 2-1 and Canyon (10-10) is 1-2. Canyon and Borger’s Saturday game was postponed to 4:30 p.m. Monday due to rainy weather.

District 1-2A

Sunray, Clarendon and West Texas High all earned wins during District 1-2A action last week.

Sunray blasted Booker 15-0, Clarendon run-ruled Gruver 18-0 and West Texas High downed Claude 17-4.

Sunray (7-0) stays in control of the league lead at 2-0 while Clarendon (16-3-1) and WT High (5-3-1) move to 1-1 in district.

During the Lady Comanches win over Claude (6-12, 1-1), Sage Lay drilled a three-run homer to lead the way.

In Clarendon’s shutout over the Lady Hounds, Gracie Wilkins drove in four runs on a 2-for-3 afternoon that included a home run. Teammate Kennadee Cummins tossed three quick innings without giving up a hit or a run tallying seven strikeouts.
