In the pool: For the second straight year, Spinhirne will represent Vega at the Class 4A state swim meet, as for the second straight year she won her two individual events at the Region I-4A meet last weekend in Andrews. Spinhirne got her first win of the day to ensure a return trip to the state meet by winning the 100-yard butterfly in 1:02.40. Later in the day, Spinhirne repeated again by winning the 100 backstroke in a time of 1:01.10. Those were the same two events in which she reached the state meet last year. Spinhirne will return to San Antonio next week as the defending state champion in the 100 back. She’s the No. 3 seed in the 100 back and the No. 6 seed in the 100 fly. Since Vega has no swim team, Spihhirne  is coached by her mother Angela.

Angela Spinhirne: “This really takes a whole village. She barely out touched the other girls, but she had exceptional underwaters at the region meet and coming up to state she’s really working on some of her turns. I think her goal is just to go out and do her best and get a PR (personal record) in at least one of the events and have fun. I think winning state has been a big thing for her this year so she’s struggled throughout the season with some of that mentally. I always have my doubts for her and there’s some big competition coming up at state, but I know for a fact she is going to give it 100 percent to achieve her best.”

Lynlee Spinhirne: “I think my main goal was to have some fun and make some good memories and I definitely fel like I did that. I hung out with some of my friends from Andrews and other schools. My swimming goal was just to go out and do my best and see what I could do. In my mind I knew it was going to be right there but it’s going to be a different game at state for sure. I felt like they were good times to put up for now, but I’m definitely looking to put up some better times. I think it’s going to take a lot of dedication. If I don’t get first, I’m glad that I’m there at least. I know for a fact that I need to hit under a minute for both my events, but specifically for the backstroke I would like to hit a PR, so somewhere around a 56 or 57 would be nice. I wasn’t too worried about hitting my best times last weekend. Just getting my ticket to state was my goal.”
