Wildorado holds off Texline
In a tight battle that came down to the final seconds, the Wildorado Mustangs avenged a lopsided loss to Texline three weeks ago to earn a hard fought 30-29 win on Senior Night in front of a packed house at the Mustangs Gym.
The win was huge for the Lady Mustangs (20-7) who pulled into a first-place tie with Texline (24-7) at 8-1 in the District 3-1A race with one game remaining. Wildorado also gets even with the Lady Tornadoes after suffering a 61-39 loss in the first meeting.
Both teams handled major momentum swings in this contest. After a sluggish first half, Wildorado led 14-8 at halftime thanks to getting out to a 12-4 lead in the first quarter. Texline battled back quickly in the third going on a 13-4 run taking a 23-20 advantage. In the fourth, the game was tied, 27-27, until Lady Mustang guard Reyna Segovia knocked a key 3-pointer from the left wing putting Wildroado on top 30-27 with 2:37 remaining. Texline did cut that deficit to 30-29 on a layup by Jada Clay with just over a minute remaining, however, Wildorado was able to hold on in the closing minute.
“It was a great win for us,” Wildorado head coach Dixie Gonzalez said. “I told the girls this was going to be the perfect storm. It was Senior Night, and we were able to survive and hold on. Texline started hitting and made a run, but we did a great job of closing out their shooters and blocking out.”
Segovia’s three points came on her timely bucket in the fourth. Jami Perkins finished with a team-high 14 for the Lady Mustangs. Clay led Texline with eight.
Vega’s 1999 state championship team honored
The Vega Lady Longhorns 1999 UIL Class 1A state championship team was honored with a 25-year reunion before the boys basketball game against Bovina on Friday night at the Longhorn Gym.
Led by former head coach Justin Schultz and assistant coach Jan Ayers, the Lady Longhorns finished the regular season 18-12 but caught fire in the playoffs that resulted in a 70-63 win over Valley View (36-2) to capture the state title at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin. Vega ended that year with a record of 25-12.
Friday’s top performers
River Road knocked off Tulia 53-44 earning the Lady Cats their first district win since January 22, 2021. Audrey Threet was a huge reason for snapping the three-year skid by lighting up the Lady Hornets for a career-high 27 points in the win.
Spearman senior and West Texas A&M signee Braylen Lusby posted 26 points that was more than enough in a Lynxettes 42-25 home win over Canadian. The victory sealed the District 1-3A title for Spearman (23-5 overall, 8-1 in district).
Dehilah Martin of Pringle-Morse had a monster outing helping the Lady Cougars double up Adrian 44-22. Martin earned a rare triple-double scoring 16 points to go with an impressive 15 rebounds and 10 blocks.
McLean’s Hailo Moon had a massive night blistering Miami with 37 points as the Lady Tigers rolled to an 80-25 win.
Realitee Brisco of Borger dropped in 24 points that helped the Lady Bulldogs to a 53-47 win against Dumas.
Stratford’s Addison Bell scored a game-high 19 points in a 60-27 win over Booker on Friday night.
Charley Wilbur scored 23 of Wellington’s 39 points during the Lady Skyrockets 39-23 victory against Quanah.
Valley’s Trinity Schlueter hard for Claude to handle inside scoring a game-high 23 points during the Lady Patriots 71-36 victory.
Holden Holwick put up 20 points as Wheeler downed Memphis 55-32.
San Jacinto’s Harlee Brabham and teammate Mikee McReynolds each scored 13 points to lead the No. 3-ranked Lady Patriots to a dominating 70-30 victory over No. 8 Fellowship Academy Kennedale. SJCA moves to 24-7 on the year and 8-3 in TAPPS District 1-3A.
