On the court: Wheeler’s senior captain had a monster weekend that saw the Mustangs go 3-1 at the Groom Holiday Tournament. Ashurst even achieved a special milestone by going over 1,000 points for his tremendous career.
Ashurst averaged 18 points a game during the Groom Tournament including a 30-point explosion in a 78-43 win over Paducah that put him over 1,000 points. On top of the scoring, Ashurst dished out an average of seven assists over the four games and was one assist shy of a triple double against Bovina scoring 14 points, pulling down 12 boards with nine assists.
On the year, Ashurst is averaging 17.4 points a game, 6.8 rebounds while dishing out 5.6 assists.
Coach Mitchell Lowrance: “We have a lot back from last year and that shows. We’re getting after it and this team has a great attitude. We all fight together, and I love to see that. Levi is a typical floor general. Whenever things aren’t going how they should for us he always calms the team down. He lives in the gym and puts in the work to always get better. I think this year compared to last is we’re seeing him be a better distributor. If he didn’t score last year things didn’t go well, but now he’s trusting his teammates more and guys are stepping up around him.”
Ashurst: “I feel like we’ve started off well and improved since last year for sure. It feels like this team has great chemistry and everyone is trusting each other. Getting 1,000 points meant a lot. I think it showed the time I’ve put in over the years. I think where I’ve really improved is being able to distribute the ball. I trust my teammates more and we have more than one person that can score. We just look forward to keep getting better and making a run at the playoffs.”
