Region I-4A
Canyon ISD did a total take over on the boys and girls side with total domination at the UIL Region I-4A cross country meet ran on the always difficult course of Mae Simmons Park.
In total, Canyon ISD sent three total teams with a pair of individuals to state.
The Randall Lady Raiders, the reigning District 4-4A champions, smoked the field on the team side scoring an impressive 35 points for the team title which was 79 points better than rival Canyon’s second-place finish of 114 points. With that victory, the Lady Raiders will make their 15th straight appearance at the UIL Class 4A state meet in Round Rock.
Randall placed four individuals in the top 10 led by a pair of freshman runners. Brooke French took second overall clocking a time of 12:04.2 on the 2-mile course. Teammate and freshman Nayomi Granados followed in third at 12:04.6, sophomore Aspen Turman placed sixth at 12:30.6 and Hailey Robertson was 10th with a 12:47.9.
Individually, Dumas’ Mia Lujan earned her way to Round Rock by coming in seventh with a 12:39.3, and Elliott Jackson became the first runner in program history from West Plains to advance to state pacing a 13:03.3.
Canyon ran a near perfect race scoring an unprecedented 20 team points to blow away second-place San Elizario’s 63 points. Canyon had five runners place in the top 10 including taking the top three spots. After coming in as the runner-up last season, senior Alex Niemiec stamped his mark this year adding the individual regional championship to his name with a winning time of 15:37.7. Teammate Lathan Lewter followed in second with a 15:52.3, Ryan Fernandez came in third at a 16:10.4, Jamison Kirton was sixth pacing a 16:45.2 and Noah Cooper came in eighth clocking a 17:02.4.
The Dumas Demons also advanced to the UIL Class 4A state meet making the bronze medal stand with 118 points. Bryan Corona led the Demons in ninth place (17:03.4) and teammate Riley Roman earned 12th (17:17.1).
Individually, Randall’s Marty Fletcher is state bound with a top 25 finish of 17:39.4.
Region I-2A
Texas Panhandle teams and individuals had a banner morning during the Region I-2A cross country meet on Tuesday.
On the girls’ side, no one enjoyed it more than the Farwell Lady Blue. Farwell tallied 69 points to edge Christoval (86 points) to claim the Region I-2A team championship.
On top of winning the team title, Farwell junior Isabella Jaime won her first individual regional title with a 2-mile time of 12:29.4. Teammate Alexis Wade was superb with a third-place finish at 12:48.7 and Kadey Urbantke made an appearance in the top 10 for Farwell in sixth with a 13:08.
The Panhandle Ettes and Gruver Lady Hounds will join Farwell at state. The Ettes made the medal stand as third overall and Gruver came in fourth. Avery Cathey was strong for Panhandle placing 14th (13:28.3) and Gruver’s Jordan Schenk paved the way at 11th (13:21.6).
Stratford’s Mila Thompson punched her ticket as an individual taking eighth place overall clocking a 13:08.6. Wellington’s Addy Mock (13:23.), Shamrock’s Skylynn Lawler (13:29.9) and Clarendon’s Tandie Cummins (13:30) are also headed to Round Rock as individuals.
Justin Bain, Zahir Loya and Braxton Lodholm all made inside the top 25. Bain ran a time of 18:08.5, Loya clocked a 18:25 and Lodholm paced an 18:27.4.
Wetera Schlachter of Boys Ranch had an outstanding showing taking fifth place individually to make his mark at state with a time of 17:15.6.
Other individual qualifiers included- Ryder Robinson of Memphis (17:21), Booker’s Adrian Rosales (17:29.7), Gruver’s Gustavo Quintana (17:31.8) and Jaron Shackelford of Sanford-Fritch (17:44.5).
