Brylyn Lopez, Hereford football, Jr.

On the field: Lopez is the workhorse for the surprising Hereford Whitefaces who went from one win in 2022 to an impressive 5-0 mark so far in 2023. The versatile junior running back is coming off his fifth straight game going over the century mark by being asked to carry the ball an eye-opening 33 times for 204 yards with two touchdowns in a big 24-21 Homecoming victory against Plainview.

Through five games this season, Lopez has already racked up 812 yards on the ground with eight touchdowns on 112 carries, averaging over seven yards a touch. Lopez has also caught four passes out of the backfield for 114 yards for two more scores.

Coach Adam Naron: “The guys are playing with a lot of confidence and energy that’s been able to win us some big games and push us into district. Brylyn is a huge part of that and the success we’re having. Not only is he a big part of the run game but he’s versatile out of the backfield in the pass game and he helps us out a lot in pass protection. His best attribute is helping out and being the guy, we can go to when want to close a game out and get conservative. He takes the load of the carries, especially late in the game and that’s huge. He’s also more of a leader this year. When I watched him play basketball last season, he was scrappy and he’s such a competitor. I could tell that was going to translate into football for us.”

Lopez: “We’re playing really good right now. There are still mistakes we’re making but that can be fixed. We just want to keep getting better by the week and fight for a district championship. I feel I’ve improved a lot since last year. I feel that I’ve gotten smarter and stronger as a player.”
