The West Plains Wolves made an early season statement by handling CISD rival Canyon to win the school’s first ever “Boss Bowl” in dominating fashion 48-21 in front of an electric crowd at Happy State Bank Stadium on Friday night.

It was all about the offense for the Wolves (2-1) who racked up an eye-opening 625 yards of offense in the victory.

“I’m so proud of our offense,” West Plains head coach Adam Cummings said. “I thought the offensive line did a good job all night controlling the line of scrimmage and giving our skill guys the opportunities to make plays. I feel like we’re starting to develop an identity on the offensive side of the ball for sure.”

West Plains jumped all over the Eagles (2-1) taking a 24-7 lead into halftime and never looking back. The Wolves were unstoppable in the run game piling up 330 yards behind Jordi Hernandez’s effort of 171 yards on 19 carries with two scores. The versatile Herendez also snagged three catches for 71 yards with another score out of the backfield on a wheel route that resulted in Hernandez with a picture-perfect hurdle of a Canyon defender to leap into the endzone.

Quarterback Reid Macon had his best game of the season as the sophomore really seems to be settling in. Macon sliced and diced the Eagles secondary throwing for 295 yards on 19-of-32 passing with two touchdown tosses. King Tallant on the outside was the main weapon for Macon to deliver his passes to hauling in 10 catches for 126 yards.

“Reid was poised and calm all night,” Cummings said. “The offensive line did a great job of protecting him, so he didn’t have to worry most of the game. He made great decisions and got out of the pocket when he needed to. I’m very proud of him and his leadership.”
