Class 2A roundup – Panhandle rolls past Friona, Farwell blanks Vega, Highland Park stays unbeaten

Panhandle blisters Friona 

The Panhandle Panthers are off to a fast start to the 2023 season after blistering the Friona Chieftains thanks to a 52-20 victory on Friday night at Panthers Stadium.

Panhandle quarterback was tough for the Chieftains to stop doing it with his arm and his quick feet. Through the passing game, Broxton Robinson went 9-of-16 for 170 yards with a touchdown, and then burned Friona for 155 on 32 carries for four more score. Caiden Cook benefitted from Robinson’s big night with a 55-yard TD reception. Defensively, Dallas Pennington had a great performance with two interceptions one that went for a pick-six. Pennington also tallied four tackles.

Panhandle is 2-0 overall on the year. Friona falls to 0-1.

Highland Park outguns Boys Ranch

In a game that saw a total of 110 total points, Highland Park took down Boys Ranch in a flat-out shootout 69-41 at home on Friday night.

Highland Park is off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2019. Boys Ranch drops to 0-2.

The Hornets put up 511 yards of offense behind quarterback Brady Thompson. The senior gunslinger ate up the Roughrider secondary going 14-of-19 for 242 yards with two touchdown tosses. Thompson also ran for 77 yards on only nine totes for two more scores. Teammate Tavian Vrede knifed is way through the Boys Ranch defense carrying the ball 19 times for 172 yards with three touchdowns and added 68 yards receiving on six catches for another TD.

Despite the loss, Boys Ranch freshman quarterback Isaac Acosta had quite the outing in his first career start going 13-for-26 for 333 yards with an eye-opening five touchdowns.

Farwell shuts out Vega 

Farwell dominated on both sides of the football resulting in a 34-0 shutout against rival Vega at Longhorns Stadium on Friday night.

The Steers (2-0) racked up 449 yards of offense while holding the Longhorns to 126 yards on the night.

Farwell gave Vega (1-1) a heavy dose of a stellar running attack that put up 346 yards alone. Leading 14-0 at half, Farwell was able to pull away in the third quarter by scoring 20 straight in the third quarter to put away the victory.

Senior standout Corey Stancell couldn’t be stopped chewing up 218 yards on 21 carries with two touchdowns. That puts Stancell over 5,000 career rushing yards for his illustrious four-year career. Quarterback Jonathan Armstrong chipped in by throwing for 103 yards with a score and grounding out 91 yards with two more TDs.

Shamrock doubles up West Texas High 

The Shamrock Irish found the win column for the first time in 2023 by doubling up West Texas High on the road, 28-14.

It’s the first career win for former Amarillo High offensive coordinator Nate Skelton as a head football coach.

Shamrock was able to get away from the Comanches (1-1) in part to a big second quarter. Leading 8-0 after the first, the Irish caught fire scoring 20 points in the second to take a 28-0 lead into half.

The Irish (1-1) earned this victory thanks to big time play from quarterback Phillip Cook. Cook was on his game throwing for 218 yards on 19-of-31 passes with a touchdown. Cook also used his feet for 61 yards on only six carries finding the endzone two more times. Braxton Allen was the go-to weapon for Cook hauling in nine catches for 105 yards with a score and had an interception on defense. Rodney Holmes had 87 yards receiving and Jeremiah Luna made seven tackles.

Spearman runs over Sanford-Fritch 

Spearman bounced back after a tough loss to Stratford in the season opener by running over Sanford-Fritch for a 48-9 win at Eagles Stadium on Friday.

Spearman did most of its damage on the ground rushing for 364 yards in the win.

The night belonged to Lynx running back JP Carbajal. Carbajal had a career performance in the victory by chewing up the Eagles defense for 259 yards on only 21 carries with four touchdowns. Jaxson Dettmer chipped in with 75 yards on four carries with a TD.

Spearman moves to 1-1 overall this year while Fritch falls to 0-2.

Wellington falls in heartbreaker to Lubbock Christian 

In a matchup of two really good football teams, it was Lubbock Christian High School escaping with a last second field goal to knock off Wellington 17-16 in Lubbock on Friday night.

Wellington led 16-14 late in the fourth quarter only to see the Eagles drive down the field late and hit a 38-yard field by Joseph Fernihough with 14 seconds left that gave LCHS the 17-16 advantage.

Wellington won the stat war holding the Eagles (2-0) to 84 total yards on 62 plays, but the Skyrockets were unable to overcome 15 penalties for 175 yards.

Wellington tallied 230 yards of offense led by Travon Lewis who chewed up 79 yards on 10 carries with a touchdown.

Gruver stays unbeaten with win over Texhoma

The Kurt Haberthur era is off to a strong start in Gruver. The Greyhounds were able to keep their undefeated ways going cruising to a 39-20 win over Texhoma, Okla., at home on Friday.

Greyhound running back Pratt McLain carried Gruver on the ground rushing for 145 yards on 18 totes with three touchdowns. Defensively, McLain did his job with nine total tackles, four of those of which were solo. Hudson Born continues to be a real force on defense totaling 14 tackles, five solo with two forced fumbles and Stephen Cowan added eight tackles with an interception.

Gruver is now 2-0 overall while Texhoma falls to 1-1.

Bovina rallies past Seagraves 

Bovina used a strong second half performance to get a 24-18 win against Seagraves in a very competitive contest on Thursday night in Bovina.

The Eagles (0-2) led 18-14 at halftime, however, the Mustangs (1-1) defense shut down Seagraves holding the Eagles scoreless in the second half. Bovina was able to punch in a go-ahead touchdown on a Daniel Herrera two-yard run that gave the Mustangs a 24-18 advantage they’d never relinquish.

Angel Lara led the ground attack for Bovina piling up 150 yards including an 80-yard touchdown run. Herrara threw for 134 yards that saw a 93-yard TD connection to Miguel Lopez.
