High School Volleyball tournament roundup – Amarillo High wins Spikefest Tournament

After opening the 2023 campaign with a win at Midland Legacy on Tuesday, AHS carried that momentum on a long road trip to Corpus Christi to claim the Spikefest championship with a perfect 6-0 mark.

The Lady Sandies (7-0 overall) opened the tournament on Friday with victories against Palacios (25-4, 25-7), Flour Bluff (25-17, 25-22) and London (25-14, 25-13).

During Saturday’s tournament play, AHS knocked off Millsap in the quarterfinals, 25-10, 25-10, swept Pioneer in the semifinals, 26-24, 25-19, and beat Veterans Memorial 25-15, 25-12 to win the tournament title.

Junior outside hitter Sienna Cavalier and setter Blair Pennington were named to the all-tournament team for their efforts. Over the six games, Cavalier totaled 63 kills with 34 digs while Pennington handed out 93 assists. Harlee Karrh added 36 kills over the weekend and Bird Moffitt hit the floor for 44 digs.

The West Plains Lady Wolves were the runner-up of the Gold Bracket at the Mansfield Tournament on Saturday.

Texas Panhandle teams have strong showing at Mansfield Tournament 

Texas Panhandle school’s made quite the showing at the always popular Mansfield Volleyball Tournament over the weekend.

With multiple Amarillo-area school’s competing, it was the Tascosa Lady Rebels making some noise placing went 5-4 at the tournament finishing 6th in the Championship bracket.

The Lady Rebels (5-5 overall) earned wins over Midlothian (25-20, 25-15), Paschal (16-25, 25-20, 25-23), Mansfield LakeRidge (25-20, 25-11), Arlington High (25-17, 25-22), and Frisco Memorial (25-22, 25-15).

Setter Meredith Sanning was named to the all-tournament team after dishing out a combined 152 assists over nine games adding 56 digs and eight aces. Teammate Saphina Stanley knocked down 46 kills during the tournament with 28 digs and seven blocks, and teammate Karlee Blucher had 38 kills to go with 26 digs and nine blocks.

West Plains and Bushland both placed in the Gold Bracket. The Lady Wolves went 5-4 for the tournament and were second place finishers falling to Coppell (26-28, 27-25, 14-25) in the Gold bracket championship.

McCall Sims was named to the all-tournament team for the Lady Wolves earning 133 digs with 11 aces. Teammate Piper Patterson led the team over nine games with 66 kills and Zanaida Murrillo dished out 107 assists with 69 digs.

Bushland took fifth out of the Gold bracket despite a 7-2 mark during the tournament. The Lady Falcons (9-2 overall) went 5-1 over the first two days of pool play with key wins over Mansfield Legacy (25-14, 25-22), Coppell (14-25, 25-18, 25-19) and Waxahachie (19-25, 25-19, 25-16). Bushland then went into the Gold bracket on Saturday and fell to West Plains, 23-25, 25-19, 27-29, in a first ever meeting before rebounding with victories against Midland Legacy again (25-18, 25-17) and Hereford (25-16, 25-13).

Mackenzie Sims tallied 70 kills over the nine games with 127 assists. Abby Howell added 66 kills while Avery Ramos hit the floor for 164 digs.

Randall places third at Argyle Tournament 

The defending UIL Class 4A state champion Randall Lady Raiders took third place at a very competitive Argyle Tournament over the weekend.

Randall is 9-1 overall on the year and only took one loss on Saturday and that was to host school, Argyle, 18-25, 25-23, 18-25. The Lady Raiders bounced back to beat Keller Central in the third place game 25-21, 25-12.

Senior standout Jordyn Gove made the all-tournament team with 38 kills in three games on Saturday, adding 25 digs. Teammate Sidney Soria dished out 102 assists in three games Saturday with 32 digs.

Caprock wins Silver bracket of Monahans Tournament 

Caprock is riding high off of last year’s momentum getting off to a solid start during the first week of the regular season.

The Lady Longhorns (5-2 overall) traveled to the Monahans Tournament on Friday and Saturday and walked away with the Silver Bracket championship.

Caprock went 4-2 for the tournament getting wins over Presidio (25-10, 25-13), Fort Stockton (25-20, 21-25, 25-14), Palo Duro (25-21, 25-15), then defeated El Paso Compass (17-25, 25-20, 25-22) for the Silver championship.

Lilliana Rangel had a big weekend totaling 40 assists with 34 digs over the six games adding 18 kills and eight aces. Teammate Kendall Wilson racked up 33 kills with 12 blocks, Reese Dindinger tallied 30 kills with five blocks and Adrienna Madrid had 61 digs with three aces and three assists.

Wildorado goes unbeaten in Dimmitt Tournament 

First-year head coach and Bushland graduate Skyler Cleavinger has her Wildorado Lady Mustangs rolling to start the 2023 campaign.

The Lady Mustangs left the Dimmitt Tournament with unbeaten mark going 5-0 with victories over Amarillo PCHEA (25-8, 25-20), Olton (25-14, 26-24), West Texas High (25-17, 21-25, 16-14), Dimmitt (25-11, 25-14), and then knocked off San Jacinto Christian (25-15, 25-13) to make it a perfect weekend.

In the win over San Jacinto, Jovi Perkins tallied 19 digs with five assists and four aces. Cacy Cornwell knocked down nine kills with four digs and Sonell VanWyk had 15 assists with seven kills to go with six assists and six aces.

Wildorado is off to a 6-0 start on the year.

Borger places second in Gold bracket of Burkburnett Tournament

The Borger Lady Bulldogs took home second place of the Gold Bracket of the Burkburnett Tournament.

Borger won seven straight matches before falling to defending UIL Class 2A state champion, Windthorst, 25-16, 11-25, 22-25.

The Lady Bulldogs had beaten Vernon (25-17, 25-16) and Bowie (25-21, 25-22) to make it to the championship game.

Katie Buchanan had 31 kills in the tournament with five blocks. Adraya Loftis knocked down 25 kills to go with 23 assists and eight blocks, and Emilee Bridges chipped in 21 kills with seven digs and seven blocks.
