District softball roundup: Amarillo High brings home third straight 3-5A title, Canyon wins outright 4-4A championship

An eight-run third inning propelled Amarillo High to another convincing run-rule win this time over Plainview, 15-2, at home to close out the regular season on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Sandies (28-1 overall) finished league play at a perfect 10-0 while claiming their third straight District 3-5A championship.

AHS held a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the third. That’s when the bats fired up with exrtra base-hits. Taylyn Shuffield delivered a two-run triple putting AHS up 8-2. Brylee Baker and Tatem Pendergraft then added RBI doubles. The big bats came through all day for the Lady Sandies. Danae Lopez had a two-run homer for her team-leading 18th of the season as the third baseman finished with three RBIs on the day. Kylee Landsbury also had a two-run homer with three RBIs in the win. Plainview finishes the regular season at 9-22, and 4-4 in district. The Lady Bulldogs will be the No. 3-seed out of 3-5A.

Caprock pummels Palo Duro 

Caprock ended the regular season on a high note by run-ruling Palo Duro 22-2 on Saturday.

The Lady Longhorns (15-7-1 overall) finish the regular season at 8-2 in District 3-5A and will be the No. 2-seed.

Grace Morales slammed a home run on a 2-for-3 day with two RBIs. Teammate Jaylen Zuniga went 2-for-5 at the dish with a triple and three RBIs.

District 4-4A

Canyon claims outright 4-4A crown 

Strong hitting and excellent pitching did the trick for Canyon in a 7-0 shutout over Hereford to close out the regular season at home on Friday afternoon.

The Lady Eagles also kept an excellent tradition alive by winning their ninth straight district championship by going 12-2 in the league and 15-14 overall.

Kylie Knowles was outstanding at both the plate and in the circle. Knowles handcuffed Hereford hitters throwing all seven innings, scattering four hits with 11 strikeouts. Knowles then took the offense going 3-for-3 with an RBI double. Amber Bertoni led a six-run fourth inning with a three-run home run and Kenah Cox chipped in two RBIs.

Dumas takes third place with a pair of wins over Pampa 

From clinching a playoff spot on Tuesday to finishing third place by Saturday is what the Dumas Demonettes did thanks to a pair of lopsided wins over Pampa.

In the regular season finale on Friday, the Demonettes dominated the Lady Harvesters with a 14-2 win at home. That put the two teams in a third-place tie at 10-4 in the league so Pampa and Dumas had a seeding-game on Saturday. Just like Friday, Dumas once again took control and never looked back getting a 13-2 victory. Dumas finishes the regular season at 26-7 will be the No. 3-seed. Pampa (18-7) went from competing for a district championship on Tuesday to falling to the fourth and final playoff spot in District 4-4A after three straight losses.

Briana Vargas did the damage for Dumas absolutely blistering Lady Harvester pitching. On Friday, Vargas was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. She then went 3-for-5 on Saturday totaling an outing of 6-for-9 over the two days. Teammate Amery Casanova was 3-for-3 on Friday with a homer and four runs driven in as Cami Velasquez was a perfect 4-for-4 at the dish on Saturday with four RBIs.

Randall shuts out Perryton 

Randall ended the regular season strong taking down Perryton in shutout fashion 24-0 on Friday afternoon.

The Lady Raiders (23-11 overall) close out the year in second place in District 4-4A with an 11-3 mark.

Lauren Garcia had a career outing for the Lady Raiders with a double, a triple on a 3-for-4 day at the dish to finish with a team-high seven RBIs. Anberlin O’Dell also used her big bat for a three-run triple. Berkley Browder worked all five innings in the circle tallying 12 K’s.

In the other 4-4A game on Friday, Borger knocked off West Plains 16-11. The Lady Bulldogs end the regular season at 15-17-1 and 7-7 in district. In their first season, the Lady Wolves finish 13-19-1, and 4-11 in the league.

District 1-3A

Bushland tames Tulia 

Bushland kept its stronghold on District 1-3A by finishing undefeated in the league with a 17-4 route of Tulia on Friday.

The Lady Falcons (25-6) end the regular season at 10-0 in district and lay claim to their 15th straight outright district championship dating back to when the program started in 2008.

Abbie Howell homered while finishing 3-for-4 with four RBIs in the win over the Lady Hornets. Chloe Cochran added two RBIs and a homer of her own.

River Road takes 2nd place in 1-3A

The River Road Lady Wildcats blistered Canadian with a 24-3 victory on the road on Friday afternoon.

Ava Sharp was on point throwing five innings with 11 strikeouts. She also hammered on Canadian pitching going a perfect 3-for-3 with a homer and a double to totaling seven RBIs. Teammate Rylee Kunkel was 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.

River Road (19-10) will be the second-place team out of District 1-3A. Dalhart (9-12) is the No. 3-seed after getting a thrilling 4-3 win over Dimmitt in 19 innings on Saturday. That means that Dimmitt (9-10) and Canadian (6-23) will have a play-in game for the fourth and final spot at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Tascosa High School.
