Randall places second at Region I-4A tournament, Provence wins individual championship 

The Randall Raider golf team had a very impressive outing by earning a second place finish at the Region I-4A Tournament on Wednesday and Thursday at the Shadow Hills Golf Course in Lubbock.

The Raiders posted a two-day score of 304 on Wednesday followed by an excellent 293 on Thursday for a 597 to finish two strokes back of regional champion Andrews (595). Not only did the Raiders advance back to the UIL Class 4A state tournament, but senior standout Wyatt Provence shot lights out of 36-holes to win the individual championship. Provence fired a 4-under par total of 140 after shooting 71 on Wednesday then an eye-popping 69 during Thursday’s final round. Teammates Jacob Montano and Jack Langford also had top 10 finishes tying for eighth overall with two day totals of 149.

Pampa sophomore Saywer Burleson qualified as an individual. Burleson finished second overall two strokes behind Provence with a 72 on Thursday and a 2-under par 70 on Thursday to advance to state.

The UIL Class 4A state boys tournament is set for May 22-23 at the Legends Golf Course in Kingsland.

Canyon makes school history 

The Canyon Lady Eagles set a new milestone by punching their ticket to the UIL Class 4A state tournament for the first time in school history.

The Lady Eagles placed second overall thanks to a two-day score of 651 at the Region I-4A Tournament on Monday and Tuesday at the Shadow Hills Golf Course in Lubbock.

Lauren Robason tied for fifth after shooting an 80 on Monday followed by a 77 on Tuesday for a 157. Chloe Stenberg was eighth overall with a 163 and Gracie Sutton rebounded nicely from an 87 on Monday to a 77 on Tuesday to come in ninth place with a 164.

Individually, Randall’s Kimber Nunn qualified for the state tournament by firing a pair of 83’s for a score of 166.

The UIL Class 4A state girls tournament is set for May 15-16 at the Legends Golf Course in Kingsland.

Region I-5A

Amarillo High earns a place at state 

It was a strong two days for the Amarillo High Lady Sandies as they advanced back to the UIL Class 5A state tournament.

The Lady Sandies made that happen by earning third place at the Region I-5A Tournmament on Monday and Tuesday at the Rawls Golf Course in Lubbock.

Amarillo High shot a two round total of 668 that saw a 351 on Monday then a 317 on Tuesday. Charlee Thacker led the Lady Sandies shooting an 80 and a 75 for a 155. Freshman Tyler Held followed with an 84-78 for a 162. The Argyle girls were the tournament champions thanks to a 617.

The UIL Class 5A girls state tournament is set for May 15-16 at the Whitewing Golf Club in Georgetown.

Region I-3A

Bushland advances to state, Culpepper places second individually 

Bushland made major strides when it counted to place third and earn a place at state at the Region I-3A Tournament on Wednesday and Thursday at the Shady Oaks Golf Course in Baird.

The Lady Falcons sat in sixth place coming out of Wednesday’s first round with a 384 but battled back shaving 35 strokes to fire a 349 on Thursday for a two-day total of 733 and a bronze medal. Senior standout Logan Culpepper was the complete difference in why Bushland found a spot at state. After a rough go with an 87 on Wednesday, Culpepper dug deep to fire an impressive 5-under par 65 on Thursday, shaving 22 strokes in one day while placing second overall.

In another wild story at the regional tournament, it came down to two sisters from Childress for the final individual spot at state. Senior Elena Jurado and sophomore Isabella Jurado finished the 36-holes tied for 10th after a score of 167. So, in a very unique situation both Elena and Isabella had to go to a playoff for the lone spot left to the state tournament. On the first playoff hole it was the senior Elena defeating her younger sister, Isabella, by making par to advance to the state tournament.

On the boys side, a team didn’t advance, however, Bushland’s Hayden Branscum tied for sixth overall (158) to make it to state as an individual.

The UIL Class 3A girls state tournament is set for May 15-16 while the boys state tournament is May 22-23 with both being held at Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin.

Region I-2A

Memphis continues dynasty as regional champs 

The Memphis Lady Cyclones continued their stellar dynasty by adding more hardware to the trophy case winning the Region I-2A championship on Monday and Tuesday at the Palo Duro Creek Golf Course in Canyon.

The Lady Cyclones tradition stands true as they’ll now make their 29th appearance at the UIL state tournament while looking for an unprecedented 10th state championship.

Memphis completely dominated the regional shooting a 757 as a team which was 55 strokes better than second-place Wink’s 812. Maggie Cook of the Lady Cyclones paved the way by winning a gold as the individual champion. Cook shot rounds of 91 and 86 for a 177 to win the title. Teammate Kionna Matthews placed third with a 181 and Braylee Brooks tied for seventh (195).

The UIL Class 2A state girls tournament is set for May 15-16 at the Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin.

Vega is headed back to state

Vega continues its strong golf tradition by getting back to the state tournament with a second-place finish at the Region I-2A Tournament on Wednesday and Thursday at the Palo Duro Creek Golf Course in Canyon.

The Longhorns shot 337 on Wednesday followed by a 338 on Thursday for a total of 675 just 10 strokes behind regional champion Sonora (665). Kylan Richardson paced Vega with rounds of 79-78 for a 157 for fourth place. Casen Brorman followed tied for fifth with a 77-83 for a 160. Danner Price of Sanford-Fritch punched his ticket as an individual tying Brorman for fifth with a pair of 80’s for a score of 160.

The UIL Class 2A state boys tournament is set for May 22-23 at the Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin.

Region I-1A

Happy’s Johnson wins third straight title

Halee Jo Johnson of Happy kept a stellar high school growing and then some by capturing her third straight Region I-1A individual championship on Monday and Tuesday at the Reese Golf Course in Lubbock.

Johnson, who is the defending UIL Class 1A state champion, was outstanding during the 36-holes with a first day round of 77, then an amazing even par tally of 72 on Tuesday for a 5-over par finish of 149.

The Wildorado Lady Mustangs are also heading to state. The Lady Mustangs earned a silver medal with a two-day total of 829 just three strokes off from regional champion, Borden County (826). Jaci Allen had the low scores for Wildorado shooting a 99-95 for a 194.

The UIL Class 1A state girls tournament is set for May 15-16 at the Plum Creek Golf Course in Kyle.

Wildorado wins Region I-1A championship 

The Wildorado boys golf team made school history by winning the school’s first ever Region I-1A Tournament on Monday and Tuesday at the Meadowbrook Golf Course in Lubbock.

The Mustangs tallied a two day score of 358-362 for a 720 total. Not only did the team win it but Hunter Corman led the team by winning the individual regional championship by firing rounds of 82-80 for a 160. Teammate Ryan Cox also made in the top 10 with an eighth place finish by scoring a 179.
