Both the Amarillo High Sandies and Lady Sandies ran away from the pack to win the District 3-5A track and field championships on a breezy Thursday afternoon at Dick Bivins Stadium.

The Sandies stacked up 236.5 points to win the boys side as Tascosa took second with 177.5. The Lady Sandies scored 263 points which was 92 points better than second place Tascosa (171).

The Lady Sandies made it a clean sweep of all three relays. AHS won the sprint relay with a time of 48.82, then won the 800-meter relay running a 1:45.25, and capped off the day by getting a gold in the mile relay thanks to a 4:11.63. Sierra Cornell had a huge afternoon for the Lady Sandies. Cornell claimed gold in 800-meter run by clocking a 2:24.53. She then ran a 58.24 to earn a gold in the 400-meter race, and ended her day as part of the mile relay gold medal winning team. Teammate Madyson Castellion blazed to a 12.36 to win the 100-meter dash, and took silver in the 400-meter (59.25) and was also a part of the gold medal sprint relay. Palo Duro’s Juantai Williams showed off her speed getting a victory in the 200-meter race with a season-best 24.83, and won two silvers as a part of the Lady Dons sprint and 800-meter relay. Tascosa’s Saphina Stanley went double gold in the long and triple jump. Stanley leaped 37-feet-3 1/2 inches for the gold in the triple, then went 17-feet-5 inches to win the long jump.

The Sandies boys’ team was just as impressive as the Lady Sandies on Thursday. Senior and Incarnate Word football signee Jameson Garcia had been nursing an injury but looked great with his speed winning a pair of gold medals. Garcia started his day as part of the AHS sprint relay team that set the tone clocking season best 42.17. He then won gold in the 200-meter dash with another personal mark of 22.09. Teammate Noah Watt won all three long distance events. Watt found the gold medal stand in the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:01.59. Watt then used the afternoon to find the gold medal stand in the 800-meter (2:00.50) and the 1600-meter run thanks to a 4:39.52. Tascosa’s Ke’Mauri Pinkard was the highlight of the field events. Pinkard won the triple jump leaping 43-feet-3 1/2 inches. He then won his second gold in the long jump (21-feet-7 inches) and brought back a silver in the high jump (6-feet-2 inches).

District 4-4A

Canyon showed off its dominance by sweeping the District 4-4A track and field meet on Wednesday and Thursday at Bulldogs Stadium in Borger.

The Eagles claimed 151 points to hold off rival Randall’s 136 points, while the Lady Eagles dominated the field racking up 249 points to Randall’s 158.

The Canyon boys showed its strength in the long distance and hurdle events. Seth Green went double gold in both the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter event. Green clocked a 14.74 to win the 110-meter hurdles, then followed that effort by running a time of 40.27 to edge teammate Andrew Stewart (40.29) by two tenths of a second. In the long-distance events, Ryan Fernandez, Lathan Lewter and Anthony Stewart placed in the top three. Fernandez was the winner with a time of 10:36.97. In the 800-meter run Alex Niemec won gold (2:00.91), and in the 1600-meter race it was Fernandez again taking first place with a 4:50.72 followed by Niemec and Lewter for the silver and bronze.

In other boys notes, Dumas sprinter Oliver Ortiz had a strong afternoon taking home a pair of gold medals. Ortiz blazed a time of 48.70 to win the 400-meter dash, and anchored the mile relay team to a gold medal time of 3:26.62. Perryton’s Daxton Rigdon has qualified in four events. Rigdon was part of the Rangers 800-meter relay team that clocked gold medal time of 1:32.35. He also took silver in the 200-meter race with a time of 22.28. In the field events, Rigdon brought home a silver in the long jump (22-feet-5 1/2 inches), and a bronze in the triple jump (6-foot).

As expected, the Lady Eagles soared past the competition using their depth to win seven out of the 11 races on the day. Senior Abree Winfrey did what she does best. Winfrey, a University of Kansas signee, won the 800-meter run thanks to a 2:20.58, then won the 300-meter hurdles clocking a 46.02 and was part of the mile relay gold medal team that ran a 4:07.07. Teammate Brooklyn Kinsey had a massive outing. In the field event Kinsey popped off a season-best 18-feet-1 1/4 to win the long jump. She followed that by winning the triple jump with another personal record of 37-feet-2 inches. In the running events, Kinsey qualified as part of the gold medal mile relay team and took the fourth spot in the 300 hurdles. Hereford’s Nikilah Whatley won the 100-meter hurdles blazing a time of 16.27, and Randall’s Kassidy Walker won the 100-meter dash (12.16).

District 3-1A

Wildorado sweeps district titles

Wildorado made it a clean sweep to win the District 3-1A championships on Tuesday in Vega.

The Mustangs tallied 233 points which was 99 points better than Texline’s 134. The Lady Mustangs also won with ease with 277 points which blew the field away as Hartley had 61 points for second.

Eva Albracht won both the 100-meter and 200-meter races for Wildorado. Albracht ran a 14.43 to claim gold in the 100, and a 29.66 in the 200 for the victory. Makenna Byrd showed held off teammate Giselle Esparza in a great 100-meter hurdle race. Byrd sped to a 16.06 which was three tenths of a second better than Esparza’s 16.09. The two then clashed again in the 300-meter hurdles with Esparza running a 52.34 for the win to hold off Byrd’s 54.07.

On the boys side, Ryan Cox won double gold in both hurdle events. Cox ran a 20.30 in the 110-hurdles for gold, and a time of 48.77 to gain a victory in the 300-meter hurdles. Wildorado was also superb in the relays by winning all three of those events.

District 4-1A

Nazareth girls, Happy boys win district championships

The Happy boys track and field team and the Nazareth girls track and field team claimed District 4-1A titles on Wednesday afternoon in Kress.

The Happy Cowboys scored 232 points to blow past Kress with 109. The Nazareth girls had a tougher time tallying 151 points to edge Springlake-Earth’s 131.

Happy’s relays won all three events to total 60 of those points and Brance Ferguson took gold in the 1600-meter run (5:00.7) and silver in the 3200-meter (11:21.3).

In girls action, Nazareth’s Caroline Myrick won four gold medals. Myrick earned her first gold winning the long jump (16-feet-0 1/2 inches). In the running events, Myrick then went on to win the 100-meter dash (13.50), the 200-meter race (27.60), and was part of the mile relay that found the gold medal stand (4:24.90).
