Canadian boys, Bushland girls claim district championships
The Canadian boys track and field team snuck past Bushland to win the boys title, while the Lady Falcons held off the Canadian girls’ team to claim the District 1-3A championship on a beautiful Thursday evening at Bushland High School.
The Wildcats scored 180 points to beat Bushland which had 174.5. Preston Miller highlighted the two days for Canadian as the junior put on a show winning five gold medals. Miller started by winning the setting new personal marks in the triple jump by leaping 43-feet-8 3/4 inches. Miller then won gold in the long jump with a season-best 22-feet-4 inches. In the running finals, Miller swept the individual hurdle championships by clocking a new personal best 39.9 in the 300 hurdles and running a 15.50 in the 110-meter hurdles. If that wasn’t enough, Miller then helped Canadian to a gold as the anchor leg of the mile relay with teammates Trace Mitchell, Easton Galla, and Julian Dominguez, running a season best mark of 3:29.70. The Bushland relay teams did have a successful afternoon. The Falcons sprint relay of Ivan Soto, Max Rodriguez, Tate Butcher and Baylor King ran a 43.20. The 800-meter relay squad of King, Easton Fuentes, Rodriguez and JT Suggs also won gold running a 1:31.60.
Leah Ruthardt had an outstanding day for the Lady Falcons. Ruthardt won the long jump by popping off a leap of 17-feet-3 inches for a gold. The junior then won the 200-meter dash sprinting to a 25.8 and then found the gold medal stand one more time as a part of the sprint relay squad with Kenley King, Bayleigh Eason and Jesse Fowler that clocked a 48.6. Spearman’s Braylen Lusby and Canadian’s Konnar McClendon were each impressive respectively. Lusby won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:26.80, and took home a victory in the triple jump with a leap of 34-feet-7 1/4 inches. McClendon swept the long-distance races by first clinching an individual championship in the 3200-meter run with a 12:18.50. The sophomore then finished the night taking home gold in the 1600-meter run clocking a 5:38.60.
District 2-3A
Shallowater sweeps 2-3A
The Shallowater track and field teams had to put in the work but both were able to win District 2-3A championships on Friday afternoon in Abernathy.
The Fillies had 195 points as Childress came in second with 144 points. The Shallowater boys scored 146 points to hold off Slaton (143) by a mere three points. Childress finished fourth with 90 points.
During girls’ action, Taylor Wiseman of Childress won the shot put with a throw of 41-feet-4 3/4 inches. Wiseman took silver in the shot put (120-feet-8 inches). Teammate Chloe Chilton won a gold in the triple jump with a leap of 33-feet-6 1/4 inches, and Hailey Holder won the 800-meter run clocking a 2:30.37. Makki Hart of Shallowater was the star of the meet winning the 400-meter run blazing a 57.96 and was a part of the gold medal winning sprint and mile relays.
The Childress boys team was highlighted by Zach Etheredge who won the shot put with a toss of 51-feet-9 1/2 inches. Ethridge also earned a silver medal in the discus (133-feet-8 inches).
District 1-2A
Gruver sweeps 1-2A meet
The Gruver boys and girls teams made it a clean sweep by winning District 1-2A track and field championships on Thursday at Gruver High School.
The Lady Hounds stacked up 146.5 points to knock off second place Stratford’s (128.5). Brenna Butler and Kimber Whitehead were the showcase for the Lady Hounds. Butler won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47.02 and was a part of Gruver’s gold medal winning 800- and 1600-meter relay teams. Whitehead earned gold in the 100-meter hurdles sprinting to a time of 17.77. The senior was also part of the mile relay winning squad. West Texas High’s Emorie McNabb wasn’t to be ignored. McNabb won the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.03, then won the 200-meter dash clocking a 26.88. She was also a part of the Lady Comanches sprint relay team that won with a 51.94. In the field events, Mia Gray of Sunray stole the show. Gray launched a winning toss of 125-5 to take the gold in the discus. She followed that up with a gold in the shot put with a toss of 38-feet-5 1/2 inches.
On the boys side, the Greyhounds dominated by putting up 211 points. That was 90 points better than second place Sanford- Fritch (121). Pratt McLain was clutch, helping the Greyhounds win the sprint relay (45.9), McLain earned a gold in the pole vault with a 14-feet-3 inches and helped the mile relay team to a second-place finish. Booker’s Adrian Rosales made it a sweep of the long-distance races. Rosales won three golds clocking a time of 2:04.08 in the 800, a time of 4:53.90 in the 1600, and then a 10:51.98 in the 3200. Sunray’s Colton McDowell found the gold medal stand winning the 110-meter hurdles (15.97) and the 300-meter hurdles (42.09) and Stratford’s Luke Braden cleared a Texas Panhandle season best 6-foot-7 to win the high jump.
District 2-2A
Wellington wins district crowns
The Wellington track teams made it a sweep of the District 2-2A track and field championships on Wednesday at Wellington High School.
The Wellington boys tallied 183 points to get past Shamrock’s 151, while the Lady Skyrockets edged Clarendon 164 to 154.6.
Junior Nixon Folk was big for Wellington winning both the 110 and 300-meter hurdle races. Folk ran a time of 16.8 in the 110, followed by a 44.4 in the 300-meter. Teammates Bryan and Braylon Tarver were also second and third in both races getting big points. Shamrock’s Caden Peevey showed off his speed getting to the medal stand three times. Peevey won the 100-meter dash blazing a 11.20, then won the 200-meter race with a 22.60 and was a part of the Irish’s 800-meter relay team that won gold with a 1:33.6
In girls’ action, Wellington’s Briley Waters won the shot put with a toss of 33-feet-11 inches and teammate Audrey Jones was the discus champion thanks to a throw of 108-feet. Clarendon’s Madilyn Benson was strong individually. Benson was a 200-meter race champ clocking a 27.30, then won the 400-meter run thanks to a time of 1:02.30 and helped the sprint relay team find the gold medal stand (52.20).
District 3-2A
Panhandle teams win district titles
It was another banner day for both Panhandle track and field teams as the Panthers and Ettes were crowned District 3-2A champions on Thursday night at Panhandle High School.
The Panhandle boys relay teams dominated racking up 179 points. The sprint relay of Brayson Choate, Cooper Neil, Landon Durst and Landyn Hack ran a 44.28 for the first gold. The squad of Choate, Neil, Hank Heck and Durst took gold in the 800-meter relay with a 1:34.13 and the 1600-meter team of Neil, Durst, Wyatt Brookshire and Hack blazed to a 3:29.74 to make it 3-for-3 in relay victories. Hack wasn’t done quite yet, as the senior went on to win the 400-meter run (52.36) and then earned a gold in the discus launching a throw of 149-feet-3 inches. Vega’s Diego Martinez had a superb outing winning both the triple jump (40-feet-11 1/2inches), then the long jump (19-feet-8 inches) and claimed silver in the high jump (6-feet-2 inches).
Like the boys, the Panhandle Ettes swept all the relay races which was the difference in holding off Farwell 200 to 181. The team of Leah Land, Sydney Adee, Grace Sims and Avery Sides won the sprint relay with a 51.15. The four-some of Land, Lexi Durst, Sims and Makennah Austin won gold in the 800-meter relay (1:49.15), and the mile relay of Austin, Land, Blakely Olson and Adee ran a 4:14.89 for another gold.
Adee added one more gold to her day by winning the 400-meter race (1:01.40). Vega’s Kami Drinnon impressed by clocking a 16.56 to get a victory in the 100-meter hurdles. Drinnon won the long jump (17-feet-1 1/2) and took silver in the 100-meter dash (12.86).
District 1-1A
Follett boys, McLean girls win district championships
The Follett boys and McLean girls track and field teams won the District 1-1A championship on Wednesday afternoon at Miami High School.
The Panthers were flat out dominant piling up 243 points, which was 196 points better than second place McLean’s 97.
Follett was so dominant that the Panthers won nine of the 11 running events. Julian Barton was the highlight for Follett getting gold medals in the 3200, 800, and 400-meter races. Barton ran a time of 11:15.53 to claim the 3200-district title, then won the 400-meter run with a 52.90 and won the 800 crown thanks to a 2:11.99. The Panthers also swept all three relays.
On the girls’ side, McLean pulled away with 200 points which was well ahead of Follett’s 104.
The Lady Tigers paced the relays by winning the sprint and mile events. Kasidy Russell, who was on both of those relay squads, also won the triple jump (31-feet-7 1/2 inches) and the high jump (4-feet-8 inches). Division I Tarleton State University signee and multi time state champion Anna Hudson of Miami took golds in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.90 and earned a victory in the 200-meter race with a 26.84.
District 2-1A
Silverton makes it a sweep of district titles
It was a solid afternoon for the Silverton track and field teams as both came away as District 2-1A champions in White Deer on Thursday afternoon.
The Owls held off Groom 144 to 132 for the boys’ title, while the Lady Owls beat Groom 151 to 140 for their respective district crown. Maddie and Brenna Francis did the work for the Lady Owls. Maddie won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.59 and was a part of the gold medal winning sprint and mile relay. Brenna was a part of the mile relay team that won and took home golds in the triple jump (33-feet-1 1/2 inches) and the long jump (16-feet-8 1/2 inches). Groom’s Taylor Ritter went double gold by winning the 100-meter dash (13.28) and the 400-meter race (1:02.31).
Sawyer Francis paced the Owls by getting to the medal stand on four separate occasions. Francis swept the hurdles by winning the 110-meter by blazing a 15.05, then taking the 300-meter with a 41.06. Francis was also part of the 800-meter relay championship and earned a gold in the long jump thanks to a leap of 20-feet-8 ½ inches. Claude’s Javon Lee showed his speed by winning the 100-meter dash (11.27) and the 200-meter dash (23.60).
