3 things that happened on Tuesday night

Canyon clinches No. 1-seed in District 4-4A

They both knew they were in the playoffs, likely as the top two seeds in District 4-4A, but the formalities needed to be set when the Canyon and Randall girls met at the Joe Lombard Gymnasium on the Canyon High campus Tuesday night.

And regardless of the status of their rivalry in the Canyon ISD, it always seems as if the Lady Eagles are the first to take care of business.

No. 4 Canyon hosted No. 17 Randall in a game where it was obvious offense would be hard to come by, as was the case in the first two games of the season between the two teams. Canyon took the lead in the second quarter and clung to it the rest of the way for a 42-33 victory which not only kept the Lady Eagles unbeaten atop the district but clinched the No. 1 seed from the district for the postseason.

It seems that going unbeaten in district is old hat for Canyon (24-3, 12-0 in district), but with Randall (22-9, 10-2) back in the same district as the Lady Eagles, there was some spice to clinching the top seed.

Randall led only once, going up 10-9 in the second quarter when Sadie Sanchez hit a 3-pointer. Sanchez showed why she might be the best underclassman in the area with a game-high 23 points, but got minimal support, as only two other Lady Raiders scored.

The Lady Eagles led 37-21 in the fourth quarter, but Sanchez refused to let her team quit. She scored seven straight points to cut it to 37-28, but her 12 points in the fourth quarter weren’t enough.

Shaylin Schulte and Sydnee Winfrey had nine points each for Canyon.

Amarillo High-Tascosa round 2 set for Friday

Tascosa didn’t overlook Palo Duro getting a 65-43 road win to keep pace with Amarillo High before Friday’s showdown at the Tascosa Activity Center.

The Lady Rebels stunned the Lady Sandies 53-50 at Amarillo High on Jan. 17. Tascosa (25-4) sits at 6-1 in District 3-5A while AHS (28-4) is 5-1 in district after having a bye on Tuesday. Avery Carter led the Lady Rebels with 26 points in the victory at Palo Duro.

Tuesday’s top performers

Pampa’s Berlin Bartlett scored a game-high 20 points and nabbed an impressive seven steals to lead the Lady Harvesters past rival Borger 58-45.

Ariana De La Rosa of Sunray poured in a game-high 28 points in a 57-53 victory over West Texas High.

McLean’s Kassidy Russell had an eye-popping performance dropping in 33 points as the Lady Tigers took out Lefors 79-25.
