On the field: No area running back did as much to make his few carries count as Davis did for Clarendon to open the playoffs last week. Davis, who has verbally committed to play for Texas Tech, showed why he’s so highly regarded in a 47-20 win over Gruver in the Class 2A Division II bidistrict game at Dick Bivins Stadium last Thursday night. On the second play from scrimmage, Davis ran 48 yards for a touchdown to put the Broncos on the scoreboard and never looked back after that. Davis finished with 275 yards on 15 carries and also ran for touchdowns of 59, 47 and 58 yards after that, the latter two coming in the third quarter which pretty much put the game away for Clarendon. It was just the latest chapter of postseason success for Davis, who has also been a starter on back-to-back state championship teams in basketball.
Coach Clint Conkin: “I’m always hoping he can kind of do that. That’s our game plan going into pretty much every ball game. We need to get Jmaury started early. That kind of gets the rest of the team going. If we can get him some big runs early the rest of the team just builds on that. Any time he touches the ball he’s a threat to do that. It kind of made me feel good to see that second play. It just kind of gives the whole team confidence. I have a lot of buddies in the coaching profession, and we talk all the time and that’s the thing they always say is that Jmaury at any time can break one. Everybody’s so worried with him. If he gets a little crease with his speed, he can be gone at any moment. That makes it tough on defenses. They’re spending so much effort on Jmaury that it opens some stuff up which is a huge advantage for our football team.”
Davis: “It felt good, especially as a senior. I got all the weight on my shoulders as the number one person who’s got the ball in my hands, so I’ve got to convert whenever I’m able to. If I have the ball, we’ve got a long way to go. (The first touchdown) just felt like a turning point. If I could do that there was a whole lot more I could do. Once that happened it just kept going. When I’m in the backfield I just picture the play in my head and see the good things that can happen. I try to find the whole which will get me the most yards and go from there. The (basketball) championships have made me know that it takes a lot to get that far and put a whole lot of hard work into it. If I can do that, we’ll win. It means a lot knowing that I’m a person (underclassmen) look up to. Maybe they can do what I did.”
