Armando Lujan, Sunray football, Soph.

On the field: Lujan didn’t start playing quarterback until a year ago but you wouldn’t know it on the basis of what he’s done this season, especially in last week’s 56-12 win over Gruver in a District 1-2A Division II game. Lujan led Sunray to clinching a playoff berth with a career-best performance in a season where he’s topped himself almost every week. He completed 24-of-40 passes for a school record 485 yards and five touchdowns. Lujan wasn’t merely one-dimensional, as he also led the Bobcats in rushing with a career-high 143 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries, only reinforcing why he’s been the leader of a team which is now 7-1 and 2-0 in district. In addition, Sunray receiver Damian Barragan set a school single-game record with 10 catches for 239 yards and three touchdowns, as the Bobcats routed longtime rival Gruver in an important district matchup.

Coach Wesley Boatmun: “It’s a situation where we’re not immune to a bad game, we know that. I think more than anything we’re to the point where we trust (Lujan) and what he sees. He’s able to do more without us than he was at any point last year. I don’t want to say that we just expect him to be able do that again against anybody. We expect him to put himself in the best situation to have success. I think he’s well-suited for what he does. He’s a very talented kid. We have a bunch of kids around him who can go catch the ball. His motor was probably running a little higher than any given week just because it was Gruver. I think he was very motivated to go out and try to put out his best effort. We don’t look at him as saying this is someone, we want to run the football for us. We want him back there throwing it around.”

Lujan: “I’ve got to give a shoutout to my linemen. They did a good job keeping me in the pocket and my wide receivers made some catches. It’s just trusting my teammates that they’ve got my back. I want to be a leader of the team. I think we had a good night. We could have done better; we just had a few mistakes. I was happy staying in the pocket because it was a good night to do that. I run the ball pretty good with the linebackers coming in and I have to move around. It makes it hard for (defenses) because they don’t know if they should cover the pass or they should or put a quarterback spy on me. I’m just trying to get better every game. I’m staying after practice and watching a lot of film.”
