Camren Cavalier, Canadian football, Jr.

On the field: In the much-anticipated District 3-3A Division II opener, Canadian traveled to Childress in what could have been hyped as the district championship after week one. Nobody showed up bigger for Canadian than Cavalier, who sparked the Wildcats offensively in a 62-28 victory which avenged a loss to Childress last season. Cavalier more than lived up to his dual threat status as he passed and ran for over 200 yards each to lead an unstoppable offense in the second half. He led the Wildcats in both passing and rushing, completing 10-of-17 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns, and running for 200 yards and five touchdowns on 24 carries. Cavalier has thrown for 1,485 yards and 10 touchdowns this season and also leads Canadian in rushing with 571 yards and 16 touchdowns. Considering Cavalier’s all-around talents, it’s no wonder that Canadian looks like the favorite to win the district title.

Coach Chris Koetting: “This was a very important game for us, and Camren really showed up. Last year he was our quarterback as a sophomore, and he’s just really come on. He’s a weapon for us for sure. He’s making good decisions. He has a really good arm and let him keep it and run. We were really young last year, and those younger guys are stepping up. I did feel like he did a really good job last year but he’s just on a different level this year both running and throwing. He’s a gym rat kind of kid. His dad’s our defensive coordinator. He’s got the bloodlines and just a really good kid. Those secondary guys start cheating down to stop him on the run and he’ll throw it over their heads. He’s just a really good part of our offense for sure and hopefully he just continues to grow. We’ve got him for this year and next year so that’s a good deal.”

Cavalier: “Our team played really good in a big rivalry game. Everyone was doing great, our receivers, our linemen, our defense. In that second half they were just outstanding. They held (Childress) to seven points in the second half and our linemen just made incredible gaps for me and our backs to run through. Everyone knows this is usually the district championship game and we wanted to show people who we were and what we had. It was really fun to watch. The linemen had my back so I just had to show I had theirs. It’s kind of whatever I get. Whatever I need to do for the team that’s what I’ve got. I think every team sees us as the team to beat. We just need to go out and give our all and keep doing the little stuff and keep improving every day and every week and show everyone what Canadian’s all about.”
