Caprock wins 2-5A DI opener at Coronado

The Caprock Longhorns got out of the gate Friday night by making a statement that they’re going to be a factor in the District 2-5A Division I race.

And maybe even more than just a factor.

Caprock took control of the district opener against Lubbock Coronado at Lubbock’s Lowery Field by scoring 21 unanswered points in the second quarter and didn’t look back. The Longhorns cruised to a 40-24 victory and send a message to the rest of the district that they need to be taken seriously.

After Coronado took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, Caprock (4-1, 1-0 in district) dominated in the second quarter. Abdulai Dorley got the Longhorns on the scoreboard with a 49-yard scoring run in the first minute of the second quarter, and later in the quarter Jamel Acosta-Lewis scored on runs of 9 and 1 yards to give Caprock a 21-7 lead.

Acosta-Lewis was a big factor running the ball, picking up 153 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries. He led a Caprock rushing attack which piled up 326 yards.

Midway through the third quarter, Dominic Barba intercepted a pass and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown to make it 31-10, which ultimately clinched the win for Caprock. It was Barba’s second defensive touchdown of the season.

Coronado fell to 1-4 and 0-1.

Class 4A

Bushland rolls by Dumas to stay unbeaten

Bushland seems intent of proving more and more each week that it’s for real, as the Falcons went on the road and soundly defeated Dumas 38-20 to stay undefeated.
The Falcons (5-0) never trailed and took control in the first half by taking a 24-6 halftime lead. Quarterback Dawson Jaco had another big game for Bushland, completing 17-of-29 passes for 312 yards and three touchdowns. Baylor King had eight catches for 182 yards and a touchdown.

Ivan Soto complemented the passing attack by running for 185 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.

Dumas fell to 3-2 and saw a three-game winning streak end. Emmanuel Ibanez threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, and Oliver Ortiz had four catches for 146 yards and two touchdowns.

Canyon edges Greenwood on the road

Canyon made a long road trip worth it to stay undefeated, making a trip to Midland and gutting out a 21-14 victory over Greenwood.

It was a defensive oriented game as neither team put up overly impressive offensive stats. Canyon (5-0) did have 396 total yards, although it didn’t translate into a myriad of points.

Sam Johnson ran for one touchdown and caught another for the Eagles.

The win may have come at a cost for Canyon. Senior quarterback Derrek Clements was knocked out of the game with an injury in the fourth quarter.

Randall edges Palo Duro

Randall came alive offensively after a scoreless first half and scored a fourth straight victory to beat Palo Duro 24-17 at Dick Bivins Stadium.

Palo Duro took a 9-0 halftime lead with nine points in the second quarter. But Randall (4-1) responded with 14 points in the second quarter in a game where defenses led the way early but Randall’s offense produced big-time in the second half.

Not surprisingly, wide receiver Nathan Baker took over in the second half for Randall. Baker had five catchers for 169 yards and two touchdowns, both coming in the second half.

Palo Duro dropped to 1-4.

Pampa holds on to beat Perryton

A big rushing attack got Pampa out in front against Perryton, but defense saved the day, as the Harvesters stopped Perryton on the last play of the game to escape with a 28-21 victory on the road.

Pampa (3-2) took a 21-6 halftime lead and had two runners go over 100 yards each. Freshman Max Neff ran for 194 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries and quarterback Michael Campos ran for 144 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries while also throwing a touchdown pass.

With the score 28-21 and time winding down, Perryton (1-4) drove into Pampa territory and was on the cusp of a game-tying touchdown, but Pampa’s Bryce Lynn broke up a pass in the end zone to seal the win.

Hereford edged by Plainview

Hereford gave its best effort of the season so far at Plainview, but three missed extra points were the difference as the Whitefaces fell short in a 35-32 defeat to stay winless.

The Whitefaces (0-5) never led but stayed close the whole game. Carlos Duran continued to be productive at quarterback for the Herd as he threw three touchdown passes.

Isaac Garza led Plainview (2-3) by rushing for 138 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries. The silver lining for the Herd is this was the first game this season in which they didn’t give up at least 50 points.
