Thursday’s games

Class 5A

Pampa (2-0) at Caprock (2-0), 7 p.m., Dick Bivins Stadium
The Rock is on a roll led by a stingy defense allowing five measly points per game and doing things like linebacker Delco Gonzalez scooping and scoring from 65 yards out. Pampa has shown moxie in going 2-0 coming back against Plainview and owning one of the great stories of the 2022 season in courageous freshman running back Max Neff. Rock defense wins out. … Caprock 31, Pampa 21

Amarillo High (0-2) at Midland High (2-0), 7 p.m., Astound Broadband Stadium, Midland
This one is pretty simple how Amarillo High can avoid going 0-3. Stop the turnovers (11 in two games) and stop Midland High’s run game averaging just under 500 yards a game. If AHS was home and not in Midland for the second time in three weeks, I’d say it would win. … Midland 38, AHS 28

Class 1A

Follett (1-1) at Lefors (0-2), 7 p.m.
The Panthers come into this game with a bad taste in their mouth after last week’s loss to Happy.  Panthers roll the Pirate ship. … Follett 54 Lefors 6

Miami (2-0) at Wildorado (1-1), 7 p.m.
This will be the first true test of the season for the Warriors and the Mustangs are looking to bounce back.  In a close one I have to go with the home team. …  Wildorado 72 Miami 64

Vernon Northside (1-1) at Hedley (0-2), 7:30 p.m.
This game should be a close one with the home team gaining the advantage again. … Hedley 52 Vernon Northside 48

Whitharral (2-0) at Silverton (1-1), 7:30 p.m.
The Owls have been competitive this year, but Whitharral is highly ranked for a reason.  The Panthers will make it a tough night for the Owls. …  Whitharral 58 Silverton 13

Friday’s games

Class 5A

Odessa Permian (2-0) at Tascosa (2-0), 7 p.m., Dick Bivins Stadium
Tascosa opened the eyes of the state by putting that hurt on a very good 6A Midland Legacy team. This test against Permian is much the same. Both teams run a similar style option offense. Give Tascosa the edge with its young sophomores impacting games again and the aggressive defense doing its thing. … Tascosa 40, Permian 28

Palo Duro (0-2) at Lubbock Estacado (1-1), 7 p.m. , Lowrey Field at Plains Capital Park, Lubbock
Palo Duro is trying to get its offense perked up having scored one TD in two games. Estacado is trying to get over that thumping from Dumas. Go with the PD offense finding the end zone. … Palo Duro 21, Lubbock Estacado 17

– Lance Lahnert
– Last week: 2-1 (.666)
– Season: 5-1 (.833)

Class 4A

West Plains (0-2) vs. Canyon (2-0), 7 p.m., Happy State Bank Stadium
This is a historic matchup between Canyon ISD schools at Happy State Bank Stadium, with old guard Canyon taking on brand new West Plains. Canyon is playing at home for the first time this season after two straight impressive road wins and West Plains showed improvement after a close loss to Greenwood. Emotions might be high, but Canyon has too much firepower and experience. … Canyon 42, West Plains 15

Dumas (1-1) at Perryton (1-1), 7 p.m.
Winner will move above .500 in this long-time non-district rivalry game. Dumas scored an impressive road win at Lubbock Estacado to get in the win column while Perryton was outgunned by Canyon. There’s potential for a lot of offense here so it could be a shootout. Dumas has a little more offensive ammunition and a better defense in this one, even on the road. … Dumas 45, Perryton 21

Shallowater (2-0) at Hereford (0-2), 7 p.m.
Hereford found some offense in last week’s loss to Wichita Falls, but defense has been a major challenge to the Whitefaces, who’ve given up almost 600 yards in each of their first two losses to Wichita Falls and Caprock. Shallowater is a traditionally strong Class 3A program and has a lot of offense. Home field will keep the Herd in it, but not enough to win. … Shallowater 45, Hereford 31

Randall (1-1) at Snyder (2-0), 7 p.m.
Randall got the offense in gear in beating Clovis, N.M. last week to give the Raiders their first win of the season. They’ve been playing solid defense so far, and that will be a big factor heading on a long road trip to face undefeated Snyder. Nathan Baker is one of the area’s best all-around offensive weapons, and he will carry things for Randall if they get sticky. … Randall 28, Snyder 13

Borger (1-1) at Lamesa (0-2), 7 p.m.
Speaking of long road trips, Borger makes one comparable to Randall with a journey south to face Lamesa. The Bulldogs got in gear offensively to beat River Road for their first win last week, and Lamesa has had trouble stopping opponents so far. … Borger 34, Lamesa 16

– Lee Passmore
– Last week: 7-0 (1.000)
– Season: 10-3 (.769)

Class 3A

Childress (1-1) at Bushland (2-0), 7 p.m.
The Falcons are playing at a very high-level while the Bobcats are still trying to find their footing early in the season. Don’t expect a letdown from the Falcons coming off a big win over Canadian. … Bushland 35, Childress 14

Spearman (1-1) at Dalhart (0-1), 7 p.m.
Heavy hearts will fill Golden Wolves stadium after the loss of beloved JV player Yahir Cancino less than a week ago. It will be an extremely emotional night for the entire Dalhart community. … Spearman 24, Dalhart 13

Friona (0-1) at Muleshoe (1-1), 7 p.m.
These old district rivals rekindle a great rivalry of two towns that are separated by 27 miles. This will be a clash of different styles during a four-quarter battle. … Friona 30, Muleshoe 26

River Road (1-1) at Wellington (1-1), 7 p.m.
Here are two teams that love to run the football and win with their physicality. The Skyrockets have the edge, but the Wildcats won’t back away. … Wellington 22, River Road 20

Canadian (1-1) at Elk City, Okla. (2-0), 7 p.m.
The Wildcats can’t lick their wounds for long after the lopsided loss to Bushland. Elk City is a real deal Oklahoma Class 4A program that can run the football. Canadian is in for another battle. … Canadian 28, Elk City 23

Sunray (1-1) at Dimmitt (0-2), 7 p.m.
It’s the battle of the Bobcats with both teams looking to bounce back after losses last week. Dimmitt has shown improvement; however, Sunray has serious weapons on offense. … Sunray 34, Dimmitt 23

Class 2A

Tulia (1-1) at Sanford-Fritch (0-2), 7 p.m.
Running back Damian Cedillo will have to be the difference maker for the Hornets if they want to put a sting on the Eagles defense. … Tulia 33, Sanford-Fritch 16

Shamrock (1-1) at Highland Park (0-2), 7 p.m.
The Hornets have shown great improvement despite the 0-2 record, but the Irish are powerful behind the dynamic duo of QB Kit Macina and RB Caden Peevey. … Shamrock 42, Highland Park 20

Sundown (1-0) at Farwell (2-0), 7 p.m.
Last season it took these two teams SIX OVERTIMES until finally Sundown scored for a dramatic 9-7 victory. Don’t look for that to be the case if the Steers clean up the turnovers. … Farwell 22, Sundown 7

Vega (1-1) at Panhandle (2-0), 7 p.m.
Here’s a game that will interest of many fans around the Texas Panhandle. The Longhorns defense going against an explosive Panthers offense. What will give. … Panhandle 28, Vega 20

Gruver (2-0) at Stratford (2-0), 7 p.m.
The Elks blanked the Greyhounds in a district battle last season on the way to a state championship. … Stratford 45, Gruver 14

Boys Ranch (2-0) at West Texas High (1-1), 7 p.m.
The Roughriders have been the talk of the early portion of the 2022 campaign. If Boys Ranch beats the Comanches, they’ll be even more chatter since the Ranch hasn’t been 3-0 since the 2011 season. … Boys Ranch 33, WT High 20

Clarendon (0-2) at Booker (2-0), 7 p.m.
It’s been a rough start for the Broncos through the first two weeks but look for head coach Clint Conkin’s team to turn the momentum on the road. … Clarendon 29, Booker 13

Memphis (2-0) at Ralls (1-1), 7 p.m.
A long road trip to the South Plains will end up beneficial in the end to keep the Cyclones undefeated. … Memphis 24, Ralls 21

Guymon, Okla. (0-2) at Wheeler (0-2), 7 p.m.
The Mustangs are in need of a win after two tough weeks. The Tigers are tough, but Wheeler has the horses to get it done. … Wheeler 20, Guymon 16

Lubbock Christian (2-0) at Bovina (1-1), 7 p.m.
The Mustangs are riding high off a thrilling win over Seagraves, but Lubbock Christian is another level. … Lubbock Christian 35, Bovina 19

– Kale Steed
– Last week: 13-3 (.812)
– Season: 21-9 (.700)

Class 1A

Darrouzett (1-1) at McLean (2-0), 7 p.m.
After getting their first win of the season the Longhorns are riding a high.  However, McLean is a solid team and just too much for the visitors. … McLean 64 Darrouzett 12

Amarillo PCHEA (0-2) at White Deer (2-0), 7 p.m.
If this game had a line at Vegas, it would be off the board.  Bucks in a romp. … White Deer 58 Amarillo PCHEA 6

A battle of unbeaten teams early in the season. The Mustangs have impressed early but the Coyotes are a whole different animal. … Borden County 48 Claude 18
