High School volleyball roundup: Amarillo High edges rival Randall, West Plains wins home opener

For the first time since 2012 Battle of Bell Street rivals Amarillo High and Randall met as nondistrict opponents on Tuesday night after the Lady Raiders dropped into Class 4A during the latest district realignment.

As expected, the match lived up to its hype of previous great encounters over the years adding another chapter to the rivalry with the Lady Sandies pulling off a rally to stun Randall in five-sets, 25-21, 15-25, 15-25, 27-25, 15-11.

Sienna Cavalier landed a double-double hitting the floor for 17 digs, adding a team-high 14 kills. Teammate and senior Jo Moffitt also had a double-double with 40 assists and 14 kills.

Randall’s Jordyn Gove did all she could to keep her team in the match with 22 kills and 17 digs. Teammate Sidney Soria tallied 48 assists.

Amarillo High improves to 13-3 overall on the year. Randall falls to 14-7.

Hereford holds off Tascosa

Fresh off winning the Granbury Tournament on Saturday, the Hereford Lady Whitefaces survived a tough road test coming-from-behind to knock off Tascosa. Hereford fell behind in the first two sets, 13-25, 23-25, but then rallied to take the last three sets 25-21, 26-24, 15-13.

Nickilah Watley and Camryn Blair were decisive in the victory for the Lady Whitefaces. Whatley, the Tournament MVP in Granbury, knocked down 17 kills against the Lady Rebels, adding seven blocks for a double-double. Blair put up 14 kills, as teammate Emma Cooper hit the floor for 29 digs. Hereford moves to 15-4 overall.

Tascosa’s Molly Culp and Sophia Stanley combined for 38 kills. Teammate Dominique Davis had 31 digs. The Lady Rebels fall to 10-10.

West Plains finally plays a home game 

After playing the first three weeks of the regular season on the road the West Plains volleyball team finally enjoyed playing in front of the home fans for the first time in program history against Childress on Tuesday night.

The Lady Wolves took full advantage of being in the friendly confines of their home gym sweeping the Lady Bobcats in dominant fashion, 25-6, 25-15, 25-13.

Jayli Franklin, Brooklyn Garcia and Piper Patterson all tallied seven kills. Brooklyn Garcia added three aces, and Zenaida Murillo dished out 14 assists.

West Plains is off to an eye-opening 17-1 overall start to the year.

Tuesday’s notes 

Bushland swept a triangular at Lubbock Coronado on Tuesday. The Lady Falcons downed Dumas 25-20, 25-20, 25-13. Bushland then swept Lubbock Coronado, 25-15, 25-10, 25-18.

Dumas did bounce back with a sweep of Coronado, 25-20, 25-15, 25-19. Hallie Coon had 11 assists with seven kills in the win.

Caprock defeated Clovis, N.M. 25-14, 25-13, 25-23. Olivia Hurnes led the Lady Longhorns with 15 kills and eight blocks.

Highland Park got past Dalhart with a four-set victory, 13-25, 25-17, 25-12, 25-19. Mercedes Harton had a game-high 34 assists with three blocks.

Palo Duro picked up a five-set victory over Borger, 25-19, 25-18, 23-25, 21-25, 15-11. Syivhanna Sutton knocked down 16 kills with nine digs.
