During bracket play on Saturday afternoon, the first-year program defeated opened with a quarterfinal victory against El Paso Hanks, 25-22, 25-20, followed by a semifinal sweep of El Paso Burgess 25-9, 25-20, and then took down Odessa Permian in three-sets, 23-25, 28-26, 25-23, to claim the programs first ever tournament title.
West Plains junior Jayli Franklin was named tournament MVP. The outside hitter totaled 30 kills in the three wins Saturday, including 15 against Odessa Permian. Setter Zenaida Murillo and Piper Patterson were named to the All-Tournament team.
The Lady Wolves are off to a historic 8-0 start to the season.
Amarillo High finished in the top four of a very competitive 24-team Tournament of Champions in Duncanville.
The Lady Sandies (5-1 overall) earned wins over North Crowley (25-13, 25-14), RL Turner (25-6, 25-2), Berkner (25-14, 25-11), Commerce (25-10, 25-16), before falling to DeSoto in the semifinals (21-25, 21-25).
Setter Jo Moffitt tallied 80 assists with 15 aces and four blocks over the weekend, Kaylie Ledbetter had 38 combined digs, and teammates Elle Krusa and Ryan Pennington combined for 42 kills.
Hereford also placed fourth in always tough Mansfield Tournament. The Lady Whitefaces (6-3 overall) went 5-3 in the 40-team tournament. Outside hitter Nikilah Whatley was named to the All-Tournament team totaling 52 kills with 44 digs.
Bushland, the defending two-time UIL Class 3A state champions, had a strong showing at the Pearland Tournament in Houston. The Lady Falcons finished in the top four reaching the semifinals of the 48-team tournament. During Saturday’s bracket play, Bushland (6-3 overall) beat Class 6A Shadow Creek in the quarterfinals (25-14, 25-20) before dropping a match to Clear Springs (24-26, 25-23, 25-21) in the semifinals.
Senior Kaele Neie combined for 89 kills, teammate Madyson Eberly had 60 kills, and setter Logan Culpepper racked up 151 assists.
Randall went 5-3 overall at the Sawyer Camillo Tournament in Argyle. Junior outside hitter Jordyn Gove was selected to the All-Tournament team combining for 93 kills with 52 digs. Setter Sidney Soria dished out an impressive 183 assists.
Pampa also had a solid showing at the Boomtown Tournament in Burkburnett. The Lady Harvesters won the Silver Bracket of the tournament by beating rival Borger, 25-17, 25-14.
Senior standout Mikalie Floyd knocked down a combined 25 kills on Saturday to lead the way. Teammate Maecie Hawthorne had 60 assists. Pampa was awarded the sportsmanship award at the tournament.
