On the final Saturday of the regular season, one of the best rivalries in state resumed with major implications on the line.
Just like it played out in the first meeting, Amarillo High was able to rally to comeback and take down Bell Street rival Randall in a great five-set match, 22-25, 25-16, 16-25, 25-20, 15-10, at the AHS Activity Center.
AHS (31-11 overall, 9-0 in district) claimed the outright District 3-5A championship for a second straight year, and will be the No. 1-seed out of the district. Randall (25-14, 7-2) will be the No. 2-seed.
The Lady Raiders led two sets to one, only to see the Lady Sandies push the match to a fifth and final set with a 25-20 win in the fourth. In the fifth set, AHS made the comeback complete with a 15-10 victory to take the season series, as well as push the Lady Sandies district win streak to 19 straight overall.
AHS senior Currie Marusak landed 27 kills in the match, followed by Joey Pennington’s 13 digs and blocks. Setter Jo Moffitt is approaching the Lady Sandies record books. Thanks to 49 assists against Randall the daughter of head coach Mike Moffitt is at 1,226 assists for the season. Moffitt needs only nine assists to break Brianne Barker’s single-season record of 1,234 set in 2006.
Saturday’s highlights
Tascosa claimed the No. 3-seed out of District 3-5A sweeping Plainview 25-15, 25-18, 25-12.
The Lady Rebels are 5-4 in district and 24-16 overall. Liv Sims had 12 kills with four aces against the Lady Bulldogs.
Dumas will be the No. 2-seed out of District 4-4A after downing Canyon 25-13, 19-25, 25-20, 25-19 at home.
The Demonettes (31-12, 7-2) secure second place behind district champion, Hereford. Canyon (16-22, 5-4) faces Pampa (23-15) at home Tuesday. If the Lady Eagles win they take outright third place.
