Canyon track teams makes it a clean sweep at 4-4A meet.

Canyon’s boys and girls teams blistered the competition on the way to sweeping the District 4-4A Track And Field Meet on the E.J. “Jeep” Webb Track at Bulldogs Stadium in Borger on Thursday.

The Lady Eagles stacked up an eye-opening 264 points, which was 162 points better than second place Pampa (102).

Not to be outdone was the Canyon boys team that tallied 217 points giving the Eagles a 76 point cushion over Dumas (141).

Quality performances happened on and off the track throughout the afternoon.

On the boys side, Canyon’s Rafe Butcher set a new season-best time of 48.76 bring home a gold medal and qualify for area in the 400 meter run. Butcher also found the medal stand as part of the1600 meter relay that placed second (3:24.32).

Teammate Joe Shaw and Samuel Ashley each brought home multiple medals. Shaw went triple gold winning the 200 meter run, and was a part of Canyon’s 400 (43.00) and 800 (1:29.94) meter relay teams that each were victorious. Ashley swept the long distance races. The senior paced a 10:24.81 garnering a victory in the 3200 meter run. Ashley followed that effort running a 1:59.74 to grab a gold in the 800 meter race, and ended his afternoon with a time of 4:36.13 to win the 1600 meter run for his third gold medal.

The Dumas boys mile relay team of Oliver Ortiz, Emmanuel Ibanez, Christian Carrera and Cade Cox smoked the field in the days final race clocking a new Texas Panhandle season-best time of 3:21.94, nearly three seconds better than second place Canyon (3:24.34).

Also Perryton’s Pablo Perez got a win thanks to popping off a 44-2 in the triple jump.

In girls action, Canyon was the story. Sophomore Abree Winfrey went double gold with wins in the 800 (2:17.62) and ran a time of 47.00 in the. Winfrey. Winfrey also punched a ticket on the Lady Eagles mile relay that left the field in behind (4:08.94).

Teammate Breanna Stuart continued her season long tear claiming gold in the 3200 meter and 1600 runs. Stuart paced an 11:08.24 in the 3200 and a 5:05.10 in the mile. Not to be outdone was another Lady Eagle with a dominating day. Thalia Solis is moving to area gaining victory in the 200 meter (26.44), and set a new personal-best of 58.89 for her second win in the 400 meter run.

The District 3-4A/4-4A Area Track and Field Meet is set for Thursday at West Texas A&M.
