Two Amarillo ISD athletes put on quite the performances on the final day of the 65th Amarillo Relays Meet of Champions on Saturday at Dick Bivins Stadium.
Tascosa’s Major Everhart and Amarillo High’s Trey Thomas both burned up the track with outstanding showings in their respective races.
Eyes have been on Everhart all track season as the speedster continues to grow stronger each week. Saturday wasn’t any different. Everhart put on the burners leaving the competition behind for a season-best time of 10.38 in the 100 meter dash. That’s the top time in all of Class 5A this year. The blazing fast junior followed that up with another outstanding race in the 200 meter run. On the final curve Everhart pulled away on the straight away for a new season-best mark of 21.42.
“I just try to jump out of the blocks, pump my arms, drive and stay loose,” Everhart said. “I’ve been working hard to get these times down. I feel right now it’s my starts that are working. My finish has always been pretty good, but I’ve been able to jump out quick.”
Everhart has caught fire on the college football recruiting scene, and these low times each week definitely aren’t hurting his case. The Division I prospect is up to 14 offers that include— Baylor, TCU, Texas Tech, Virginia Tech and Vanderbilt.
“It’s been great to get these offers,” Everhart said. “I’m working towards that, and it’s been a dream of mine to play at the next level.”
Not to be outdone was Thomas. The son of former White Deer legend and Texas Tech former defensive back, Bart, found the medal stand three times for the Sandies on Saturday. Thomas started his afternoon as the opening leg for the AHS sprint relay which won with a time of 42.69. He then left the field behind coasting to victory in the 300 hurdles clocking a 38.66.
“Coming in I knew I was going to have some competition,” said Thomas, who set a personal-best with a time of 38.36 during Friday’s prelims. “Alex Thompson of Panhandle is extremely talented. I knew I had to go out and run pretty clean. I just got out early and kept my head down.”
Thomas wasn’t finished after the hurdles. As the anchor leg of the mile relay, Thomas took off with the lead on the final lap and was able to stretch his distance on the final straight away. By the time he crossed the finish line Thomas and his team had won the race and set a new season-best time in the process with a 3:25.89.

Amarillo Relay Meet of Champion notes
The Amarillo High boys team won the 65th running of the Amarillo Meet of Champions racking up 186 points. Tascosa followed in second with 109.
Tascosa distance runner Demetrius Guerrero had a fantastic afternoon earning two gold medals. Guerrero won the 800 meter run (2:00.39), then followed that effort by holding off Amarillo High’s Isaac McGill in the 1600 meter run thanks to posting a season-best 4:35.09.
Rafe Butcher caught attention from fans in the crowd and on the infield when he pulled away from Amarillo High’s Damonze Woods to earn a new personal-best in the 400 meter run. Butcher’s ran a 48.39, which is the best time in the Texas Panhandle all season.
Amarillo High’s Sammy Alcala was the lone competitor of the wheel chair races. Alcala received two standing ovations for his events as he finished with a 20.66 in the 100 meter, followed by a 1:37.61 in the 400 meter.
