Small school roundup: WT High out guns Gruver, Canadian flexes its muscle; Vega lights up scoreboard

An offensive firework show took place in Stinnett as West Texas High out gunned Gruver 74-46 at Comanches Stadium on Friday night.

Both teams have had a successful stint in the early in the season, making this one of the premier games in the Texas Panhandle.

The Comanches, known for their fast-paced spread offense, dominated the ground game, compiling 524 yards on the ground opposed to Gruver’s 148 rushing yards.

Gruver senior quarterback Jalin Conyers had a big night in the passing attack as he threw for 300 yards, rushed for 127 yards and compiled six total touchdowns.

The Oklahoma commit exhibited a dynamic game and senior tight-end Matthew Felderhoff performed in a career night, however, it wasn’t enough for the Greyhounds as West Texas High put on an offensive clinic.

Comanche quarterback Avian Cruz had a monster game running the football. He only threw one completion for a touchdown, however, the small in stature quarterback shifted his way to a 367 yard performance with six rushing touchdowns.

West Texas High wins big at home in a game that saw a combined 120 points, moving their record to 2-1 while Gruver picks up their first loss of the season finishing the week three at 2-1 in 2019.

Canadian blanks Perryton

Canadian wasted no time taking care of Highway 83 rival Perryton on Friday night, shutting out the Rangers 48-0 at Rangers Stadium.

The running game was huge for Canadian led by junior tailback Hayze Hufstedler’s 113 yards and three touchdowns.

Quarterback Grant McCook was efficient, going 14 of 23 for 126 yards, connecting on a touchdown. The Canadian defense was lights out once again for head coach Chris Koetting. Canadian has now won eight of the last nine in this series.

The Wildcats improve to 3-0 on the season as the Rangers fall to 1-2.

Vega routes Highland Park

Vega lit up the scoreboard Friday night for a crazy 73-24 victory against Highland Park in a battle of unbeaten teams at Longhorns Stadium.

The Longhorns led the entirety of the game in part to the spectacular performance put on by quarterback Carson Kirkland.

The senior captain rushed for 289 yards including four visits to the end zone. The Hornets got a majority of their offense through the air. Highland Park’s QB Hunter Nicholas finished the game with an impressive 319 yards.

Bushland blanks Borger

Bushland overcame a slow start to blank the Borger Bulldogs 38-0 on Friday night at Bulldogs Stadium.

Bushland continues to roll at 3-0 overall, as the Bulldogs fall to 1-2.

Falcons quarterback Jared Thomas fueled the offense putting up 186 yards passing and three touchdowns. The running game found a new gear in this one compiling 229 yards against the Bulldog defense. The Falcons defense also stepped up holding Borger to 98 total yards.

Panhandle dominates Childress

The Panhandle Panthers came out on top in their homecoming game against the Childress Bobcats 54-13.

The Bobcats have bested Panhandle the last three years, however, the fast-paced option offense picked apart a struggling Childress team. In fact, this is the first time since 1967 that Childress has started off at 0-3.

Panhandle’s commanding night started when senior running back and linebacker Houston Heck returned the opening kick-off 98 yards for a touchdown. The hot start provided confidence for a dominating performance on both sides of the football for the Panthers.

Panhandle junior quarterback Wesley Jones was superb, completing 11 passes for 226 yards and a touchdown.

Childress’ two scores came off a Miguel Salinas break away run for 21 yards in the third quarter and a fourth quarter Trent Mayden pass to Avery Jalomo for 41 yards.

Childress falls to 0-3 on the season while Panhandle moves to 3-0.

Spearman takes down Sunray

The Spearman Lynx shook of first half rust on the way to a 40-8 win against Sunray Bobcats Stadium on Friday night.

Spearman led only 13-0 at half, but exploded for 27 points in the second half.

Spearman sophomore running back Brenen Thompson had a game-high 188 yards on 14 carries with an eye-opening five touchdowns.

The Lynx are 3-0, as Sunray’s woes continue at 0-3.

Wheeler bounces Clarendon

It was a bounce back night for Wheeler as they dominated Clarendon 33-8 at home on Friday.

The Mustangs improve to 2-1. The Broncos fall to 1-2.

Running back Hesston Marshall grinded out 316 yards on 31 carries and four touchdowns to lead Wheeler.
