West Texas A&M Athletic Director Michael McBroom has announced on Monday that the school has parted ways with head football coach Hunter Hughes after six seasons.

Hughes is coming off a tough year where the Buffs went 5-6 overall and lost their final three games of the season.

“I am extraordinarily grateful for Hunter Hughes and the efforts of the coaching staff,” McBroom said. “Under his leadership, the football program has achieved historical high marks in the classroom including graduation rates. He is a consummate team player on campus and in our community. He has operated a program that is committed to compliance with NCAA rules.”

“Our football team’s performance has also improved under his leadership, with several wins over ranked opponents during his tenure. However, the number of Division II wins over the last two seasons hasn’t met the high expectations we have for each of our programs at WT. This alone is the reason for my decision today.”

Hughes, who took over a program that were facing NCAA sanctions in 2017, went 32-29 overall in six years that included three winning seasons. Hughes also registered an 18-22 mark in Lone Star Conference action. Hughes coached 49 All-Lone Star Conference selections during his time while achieving the highest graduation rates and GPA in school history.

McBroom stated that a search for a new head football coach will immediately begin.
