Charlee Thacker, Amarillo High golf, Jr.

On the course: Thacker set a new school record by shooting a new 36-hole low round at the UIL Class 5A state tournament at the White Wing Golf Club in Austin last Monday and Tuesday. The junior tied for fifth as an individual by shooting a 78 in the first round followed by a very impressive 2-under par 70 for a two-day total of 148. Thacker, the reigning District 3-5A champion, is the first Lady Sandie golfer to ever shoot under par in a round at the state tournament. AHS finished 10th as a team overall.

Coach Skyler Walden: “I think Charlee has become a leader for us. She won the MVP award elected by her team. That’s what I love the most because golf is known as an individual sport, but Charlee always does what is best to benefit the team. She doesn’t talk a lot but does everything right on and off the golf course. I was very impressed by what she did at state. When you’ finish in the top five, you are elite. She played good at regional then went to another level at state. But she knows that if it wasn’t her for her team, she may not have made it to state. She’s just an unbelievable young person. She always helps out a teammate and she is very high character she is contagious in how everyone wants to be around her.”

Thacker: “It was very exciting to finish top five at state. The second day I was able to make my putts. I had great approaches giving me birdie chances and it was fun and have a red number at the state tournament. I just happen to have it going and hitting fairways and greens. It still hasn’t sunk in that I set a school-record. After shooting a 78 the first day, I didn’t have many expectations but to come back was exciting. I just have to say how much I love my team and how much they mean to me. We’re playing for our team and each stroke counts. That helps my mindset that I’m playing for my team.”
