Dumas edges Canyon in thriller

In what might have been one of the Amarillo-area’s best games of the year, Dumas threw a monkey wrench into Canyon’s potential district championship celebration.

Freshman kicker Joshua Samarripa hit a 39-yard field goal in the fourth quarter with no time left to complete a late comeback as Dumas defeated Canyon 45-42. The win kept Canyon from clinching a district championship and put Dumas (4-5, 2-1) in the conversation for getting a gold ball.

The two teams traded blows in an offensive explosion in which Dumas held a 35-28 halftime lead. However, Canyon’s Christian McGuire, who had a game-high 275 yards and three touchdowns on 27 carries, ran for two touchdowns, including a 19-yard run early in the fourth quarter to give the Eagles (7-2, 2-1) a 42-35 lead.

Dumas, however, tied the game at 42 on a 46-yard scoring pass from Colton Mills to Imanol Marquez. Mills completed 13-of-21 passes for 278 yards and three touchdowns.

In the end, it was Samarripa who was the hero with his field goal. It ended a game in which Eduardo Hernandez ran for two touchdowns for Dumas and Luis Escarcega ran for one and caught another.

Randall beats Hereford in OT

The Randall Raiders bounced back from a disappointment against rival Canyon a week earlier to clinch a share of the district crown at home against Hereford.

Quarterback Tryston Sanchez kept it for a 16-yard scoring run in overtime to give the Raiders a 27-20 win. Randall (6-4, 3-1) sealed the win on an interception by Tayren Combs on Hereford’s ensuing possession.

Hereford (6-3, 1-2) had a chance to win in regulation after Kalub Ramirez threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Nick Torres to tie it 20-20 in the fourth quarter. But the Whitefaces missed the extra point, necessitating overtime.

Sanchez had a big game running the ball for Hereford with 133 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries. Ramirez countered for the Herd by throwing for 247 yards and two touchdowns and running for another score.

Hereford’s Brylyn Lopez ran for 118 yards on 26 carries.

Perryton routs Borger

Perryton’s new offense continued to produce, as the Rangers routed Borger 41-14 to keep them in the conversation for a share of the district title.

Julian Cervantes, who Perryton (3-6, 2-1) moved from quarterback to the perimeter offensively, continued to make big plays. He had 10 carries for 167 yards and four touchdowns, and seven catches for 169 yards and another touchdown.

Cooper Schilling, who took over at quarterback, completed 15-of-22 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns.

Borger fell to 4-5 and 1-2.

In the other district game, Seminole put it on Levelland 45-19.

Lubbock-Cooper runs past Tascosa

It’s no surprise that a playoff spot was clinched Friday night at Dick Bivins Stadium when Tascosa hosted Lubbock-Cooper. But it was who did the clinching which left the home team uncertain.

Tascosa played with Cooper for a half in what was promising to be a thrilling contest. However, Cooper took the lead with 24 unanswered points and rolled to a 45-27 victory to clinch a playoff spot.

The Rebels (3-5, 2-3 in district) could still make the playoffs with a victory over Lubbock Coronado next week.

Cooper (6-3, 4-1) wore down Tascosa with 372 yards rushing. Jayden Hibbler foreshadowed what was to come for the Pirates by opening the scoring on a 29-yard run, just one of the highlights of a night where he had 177 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries.

The game was tied at 21 before Cooper’s Cub Patton kicked a field goal to make it 24-21 with 53 seconds left in the first half. Cooper opened the second half with 21 straight points, as Ryan Rodriguez threw for a score and ran for another.

Tascosa’s Coltyn Fulton threw for a touchdown and ran for another.

Amarillo High falls at Abilene

In another game which was close at halftime, Amarillo High stayed with Abilene High early, but the Eagles put the clamps on defensively to defeat the Sandies 24-14 and clinch the outright district championship.

After a scoreless first quarter, the teams traded scores in the second quarter. Amarillo High (4-5, 3-2) tied it 14-14 when Bryson Brown returned a kickoff 69 yards for a touchdown with 29 seconds left in the first half. Abilene’s Brayden Henry ran for two touchdowns in the second quarter.

The Sandies never got anything going in the second half. Naim Segura’s 28-yard field goal gave the Eagles (8-2, 6-0) the lead for good early in the third quarter, and Abilene clinched it on Chad Lara’s 19-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Amarillo High can still clinch a playoff spot by beating Lubbock Monterey next week.

Lara ran for a game-high 101 yards on 19 carries. Jackson Howle had seven catches for 100 yards for the Eagles.

In the other district matchup, Lubbock Monterey rallied from behind to stun rival Lubbock Coronado, 14-7.

Slow start dooms Palo Duro against Wylie

Palo Duro fell behind early on the road against Abilene Wylie and never caught up, as the Dons lost 33-16 and find themselves in a must-win situation to close the regular season.

The Dons (3-5, 1-3) must beat Plainview at home next week to clinch the district’s fourth and final playoff spot.

Wylie (6-3, 3-1) clinched a playoff spot by jumping on top quickly. Bear Meng threw two touchdown passes and ran for another as the Bulldogs took a 21-3 lead in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs took a 33-3 lead before Palo Duro got in the end zone, as Braden Regala caught a touchdown pass and returned a punt for a score. Meng completed 13-of-19 passes for 198 yards.

Kemai’j Barnes and Darien Lewis scored on runs in the fourth quarter for Palo Duro to make the score more respectable.

Wichita Falls Rider rolled over Plainview 49-16, and Abilene Cooper smoked Lubbock High 61-7.
