Canadian blanks Tulia to clinch 3-3A Division II title

In what was a truly special night on a crisp fall evening in Canadian that had nothing to do with the actual game, however, the No. 2-ranked Wildcats were able to focus with a 72-0 blistering of Tulia on the newly minted Chris Koetting Field at Wildcats Stadium on Friday night.

Canadian ISD did a tremendous tribute to honor former legendary head coach Chris Koetting at halftime with a special field dedication that overshadowed the district matchup. Koetting retired last April as Canadian’s all-time winningest coach with an impressive 165-24 record over 13 years with three UIL state championships.

On the field, Canadian stays undefeated at 9-0 and clinched a share of the District 3-3A Division II crown with a 4-0 mark. Tulia’s struggles continue at 1-8 overall and 0-4 in district.

The Wildcats didn’t hesitate putting this game away on the opening of the game when Camren Cavalier hit a quick toss pass to Luke Flowers who turned on the jets to go 65-yards giving the Wildcats a 7-0 lead seconds into the opening frame.

The Wildcats cruised from there building a 56-0 halftime advantage.

Flowers found paydirt one more time on a 75-yard punt return and finished with 84 receiving yards in limited work. Cavalier finished 7-of-11 for 185 yards with four total touchdown passes all in the first half. Receiver Preston Neumeier snagged two catches for two touchdowns of 60 and 34 yards while taking a pick-six back for another score.

Friona runs past Spearman

In a District 3-3A Division II game with major playoff seeding implications, the Friona Chieftains chewed up Spearman behind a powerful ground attack to get a key 40-27 road victory on Friday night.

The Chieftains are in the Class 3A Division II playoffs at 3-1 and are currently tied with Childress (5-4, 3-1) for second place. Friona will host the Bobcats in next week’s regular season finale for the outright No. 2-seed. Spearman (3-6, 1-3) will need to beat Tulia next week to clinch the fourth and final playoff spot.

Friona opened up a 19-0 halftime lead behind a pair of Cade Seaman touchdown runs of nine and six yards followed by a 19-yard scamper from Aaron Rosales.

The Lynx fired back with 13 unanswered third quarter points before the Chieftains answered with 14 straight points of their own on a Carson Seaman quarterback three-yard plunge and another Cade Seaman score that build the advantage to 33-13 in the fourth quarter.

Cade Seaman, his twin brother Carson, who both played at Spearman last year, and Rosales all went over the century mark on the ground. In fact, Friona totaled 356 yards rushing as a team.

Cade toted the rock 23 times for 138 yards with three touchdowns. Carson carried it 22 times for 134 yards with a rushing touchdown and passed for 53 yards and Rosales chipped in with a pair of TDs on 104 yards rushing on only eight carries.

Spearman played well offensively piling up 286 rushing yards led by JP Carbajal’s 191 yards on 30 carries with two touchdowns. Jaxson Dettmer tallied 60 yards on only eight carries.

Mathis shines on Senior Night to lead Childress over Dimmitt

Da’Reon Mathis made his final game at historic Fair Park Stadium count as the Senior decimated Dimmitt with his wheels that helped Childress roll to a 65-7 win in Childress on Friday night.

Childress totaled 607 yards of offense with 448 of those coming on the ground. Mathis was a huge reason for that success. Mathis, a four-year varsity starter for the Bobcats, blistered Dimmitt for 271 yards on 20 carries while finding the endzone an eye-opening six different times including a 67-yard gallop for a score in the second quarter.

Childress improves to 6-3 overall but more importantly the Bobcats clinch a Class 3A Division II playoff spot at 3-1. The Bobcats will travel to Friona next week for a battle for second place out of District 3-3A Division II. Dimmitt falls to 2-7, 1-3.
