District 1-3A
It was a very exciting Friday afternoon, as the Canadian Wildcats were able to make a furious comeback and beat Bushland to win the District 1-3A team title at Randall High School.
Coming down to the final race, the Wildcat mile relay was able to grab the gold and finish with 154 points to Bushland’s 147.
The Wildcats trailed by 40 points following Thursday’s opening day, but thanks to a strong showing on the track, Canadian was able to get the job done. Canadian dominated the long distance events with Joseph Dominguez winning two gold medals in the 3200-meter race with a 4:44.83 and then brought home a victory in the 1600-meter run (10:38). Teammate Luis Valles won the 800-meter race pacing the field with a time of 2:08.08, while earning silver in the 1600 (4:54.16) and the 3200 (10:46).
On top of those showings, teammate CJ Jiminez won the 400-meter dash clocking a 51.99 and was the anchor leg of the gold medal mile relay team that secured the team championship thanks to a 3:32.97, and Bridger Burris came up clutch finding the gold medal stand with a win in the 300-meter hurdles (42.58), winning another gold on the mile relay team and qualifying for the area meet by getting fourth in the long jump (19-10).
Highlighting Bushland’s second place finish was junior multi-sport star Jaxon Lawler. The talented two-way lineman on the gridiron made his presence known by setting two personal-records Thursday. Lawler won two gold medals with by uncorking a throw of 182-0 3/4 and then unleashed another impressive toss of 59-2 to win the shot put.
Dalhart placed third as a team with 129 points with some very solid performances. Luis Deleon showed what he could do winning the 100-meter dash getting a time of 10.84, and was also a part of the Golden Wolves gold medal winning sprint (43.16) and 800-meter relay teams (1:30.93). Teammate Brett Alver earned gold in the 200-meter sprint clocking a 22.32 on top of being a part of the sprint and 800-meter relay squads, and the versatile Hunter Trusler popped off a 21-4 1/2 to get a gold in the long jump as well as being on both the sprint and 800-meter relays.
In girls’ action, the Bushland Lady Falcons soared to a District 1-3A championship with an eye-opening 205.50 points to beat second place Dalhart (120) by 85.5 points.
Leading the Lady Falcons was sprinter Emily Carter. Carter won an individual gold medal by sprinting to a time of 26.08 to take the 200-meter dash. Carter was then a key cog on the Lady Falcons gold medal winning sprint (49.63) and 800-meter relay teams (1:44.27). Teammate Jordan Boyett did her part claiming the long jump championship with a leap of 17-1 1/4. Boyett won her second gold as part of the sprint relay and advanced with a bronze medal in the 100-meter dash (12.94).
Dalhart’s Reese Jenkins was a highlight of the meet qualifying for area in four events in the field and on the track. Jenkins started Thursday by clearing 9-feet to win the pole vault championship. On Friday, Jenkins turned on the jets to get a victory in the 100-meter dash outrunning the field with a time of 12.39 for a second gold. Jenkins was then on the silver medal sprint relay team (51.27) and punched a ticket to area in her fourth event getting bronze in the 800-meter relay (1:50.06).
Jenkins teammate Victoria Terrazas also had a superb outing. Terrazas dominated the long distance scene Thursday and Friday. Terrazas opened Thursday pacing the field with a 12:46 to win the 3200-meter race. On Friday, Terrazas won her second gold in the 800-meter race thanks to a 2:29.46 and placed second in the 1600-meter run (5:17.12).
While Canadian was fourth as a team, Jacy Long will be heading to area in two events. Long is one to watch and she proved that with an impressive time of 59.85 for a gold medal in the 400-meter sprint and then qualified for area as a part of the Lady Cat mile relay team that took the fourth and final spot (4:19).
The District 1-3A/ 2-3A Area Track and Field Meet is set for Monday, April 20 on the campus of West Texas A&M.

District 2-3A
It was a banner showing for Idalou, as the Wildcats and Lady Wildcats made it a clean sweep for team titles during the District 2-3A Track and Field Meet on Tuesday and Wednesday at PlainsCapital Park at Lowrey Field in Lubbock.
The Lady Wildcats put together a solid two days with 180 points to take the district championship.
Brylee Heflin is headed to area in three events. Heflin blazed a time of 12.22 to win the 100-meter dash for a gold medal and was on Idalou’s sprint relay (50.16) that found the gold medal stand. The freshman also made it to area getting bronze in the 200-meter dash (26.29). Teammate Jackie Alvidrez made it out in both hurdle races. In the field events, teammate Chess Thompson went gold and silver in the discus and shot put and discus. Thompson tossed a 114-10 to get the discus championship and then was silver in the shot put (34-1 1/2).
As for individual performances, Lubbock Roosevelt’s Jazzy Chavira went double gold in the 3200-meter and 1600-meter events. Chavira out paced the field with a time of 12:55.44 for a championship in the 2-mile race and then set the tone with a 5:47.02 to win the 1600-meter.

On the boys’ side, Idalou stacked up 153 points for a team title.
Adrian Salas can flat out fly and that showed winning the 100-meter dash blazing a time of 10.67. Salas wasn’t done as he won the 200-meter race sprinting to a 21.68. Salas also qualified for area as a part of the sprint relay team that earned fourth place (43.37).
Another big help was the throwing of Idalou’s Peytan Moyers and JT Phillips. Both were impressive in the discus with Phillips tossing out a gold medal throw of 167-6, followed by Moyers silver medal throw of 166-2.
Slaton’s Z’Quedrian Whaley made a solid effort for MVP of the meet. Whaley swept the long jump and triple jump events by popping off a 22-8 1/2 in the long jump and a 44-5 1/2 in the triple. During the running portion, Whaley was the second leg of the Tigers gold medal sprint relay team (42.70), and won silver on the 800-meter relay (1:31.47).
In the long distance races, Lubbock Roosevelt’s Billy Bond hit the gold medal podium two times. Bond clocked a 2:04.37 for a win in the 800-meter and then ran a 4:37.35 to get a victory in the 1600-meter race.
