Seth Mayberry, Plainview football, Sr.
On the field: Plainview put a shock into the state last Friday beating Lubbock-Cooper 37-22 in a District 2-5A Division II opener. Mayberry, who holds every school passing record over his four years as a starter, had another incredible performance, as the senior torched the Pirates defense. Mayberry used his ability to get out of the pocket carrying the ball 25 times for 185 yards with a touchdown. Through the air, Mayberry diced up the Cooper secondary once more going 16-of-26 for 262 yards passing with three more scores.
The dual-threat quarterback is tacking on to an unbelievable high school career so far through the first five games already rushing for a team-high 620 yards on the season with seven touchdowns and has thrown for 1,132 yards with 11 more TDs.
Wyatt Martinez: “The season is going well for us. We got through district over .500 and I feel we’re getting our guys in the right spots. I love the way the offense is playing, we’ve been averaging 37 points a game. I think the defense has stepped up and we’re clicking. This senior class is special and Seth is one of those that makes it special. He is an incredible athlete and it’s rare when you see a four-year starter like him. He watches more film and studies more than any athlete I’ve ever seen. He’s a hard worker, a leader and loves to compete. He’s also a four-year starter in baseball for us. He’s just an overall all-around athlete.”
Mayberry: “I think we’re playing well as a team right now. The goal for us is to get better and go 1-0 every single week. I think beating a team like Lubbock-Cooper gives ua a lot of confidence and can take us a long way. I’m always just trying to get better. I want to make as many plays I can for this team and be the best leader I can for these guys.”
